Not enough is said here, or elsewhere, about the good kids that are out there.
Good for you Stewart and a good job too!
New Braunfels Boy Scout Stewart Clark worked all Saturday morning building a new walking bridge at Landa Park for his Eagle Scout project. The Eagle Scout hopeful dismantled the old wooden bridge on Friday and worked with his scout leader and others to build a new steel walking bridge over the Landa Park wading pool.
Wade Tomlinson, Parks Planner for New Braunfels Parks and Recreation, said working with the Boy Scouts makes sense for the city and for Parks & Recreation. “The expenditure for a new bridge isn’t something that we’ve budgeted for, so it’s a win-win situation where he’s able to get an Eagle Scout badge that he’s worked really hard for and we’re able to be a benefactor of his hard work,” Tomlinson said. Tomlinson oversaw the progress on the bridge project, and said building a new bridge was something Landa Park really needed. “It was in bad shape,” Tomlinson said. “People wanted to tear it down and we just kept putting screws in it telling people that we have a bridge coming,” he said. “This was a big project,” Tomlinson said. “This was not an easy one.”
Clark, 16, said building the bridge was preceded by a year of planning. “I knew I didn’t want a build another wooden bridge that would fall out in a couple of years,” Clark said. Clark not only worked with Parks & Recreation but also with City Engineering and U.S Fish and Wildlife Service to obtain approval for his project. Acme Bridge Co. helped with the building of the bridge. Lowe’s, McCoy’s and Everhart also helped Clark by donating cement for the project. Besides lessons learned with the technical know-how and coordination involved in building a bridge;
Clark mostly values the project as a symbol of how far he’s come. From the age of 8, Clark has been a Boy Scout.“It feels really good,” Clark said when asked about making Eagle Scout. “They say about 5 percent of boys that enter into Boy Scouts become Eagle Scouts, and to achieve one of the highest awards is just an honor.”
