So sleep apnea results in a loss of brain matter and shrinking of the brain?

For people with sleep apnea, it's a bad-news, good-news study.

The bad: The frequent interruptions of the brain's oxygen supply by serious sleep apnea result in shrinking gray matter in the brain.

The good: Those who faithfully follow their breathing-mask therapy can grow it back, according to the study.

Sleep apnea is a breathing disorder that involves a decrease or halt in airflow when the muscles relax during sleep and allow soft tissue to block the upper airway. A struggling sleeper may snore loudly and even wake frequently during the night in an effort to get more air.
