Hello??...I'm calling from the jail.

One or two bad apples spoil the whole bunch.

3 Bexar County Jail officers under investigation
Selena Hernandez - KENS 5 Eyewitness News

A shakedown is shaking up staffing at the Bexar County Jail. KENS 5 has learned three officers at the jail are under investigation, suspected of supplying inmates with cell phones.

"That is one of the presumptions, that they may have been offered money to bring the items in," said Col. Earl Griffin, Bexar County Jail assistant administrator. "You're going to have one or two bad apples that are compromised by the inmates."

One of those officers is on administrative leave and all of them could face serious charges for reportedly connecting inmates with cell phones.

Bexar County guards are conducting daily searches of inmates' cells, searching through every package looking for a specific contraband. About five phones, one inside a jar of peanut butter, have been confiscated.

As investigators work the case, jail administrators are left to control the chaos on the inside, while making sure those hired to maintain the law aren't busted for breaking it.

"We've stepped up inspections of the units," said Wendell Busby at the jail. "Hopefully we can catch it before it gets out of hand. They can control their business — their illegal activities on the outside — from within by using that cell phone."

Administrators say this is a federal offense, and they plan to pursue formal charges.
