BOERNE — More than 23 years after Joe Daggett's mysterious disappearance from his cattle ranch outside Fort Stockton, a trial began here Tuesday for one of three suspects charged with plotting to rob and murder him.

The defendant, Lightsey Nathan “L.N.” Saul, 59, is the former husband of Sheridan Porter, who Daggett, then 27, was dating when he vanished March 1, 1988.

Extensive searches failed to locate Daggett, who — at the urging of his family —was declared dead in 1995.
