Former DA investigator sentenced in state judge corruption scheme
By Lynn Brezosky - Express-News

BROWNSVILLE — A former investigator for the Cameron County district attorney's office was sentenced Wednesday to a year and a day in federal prison for his role in a justice-for-sale scheme involving convicted former District Judge Abel Corral Limas.

Jaime Munivez, of San Benito, read from a statement at the sentencing and apologized for pain and embarrassment his actions caused. “I realize that this mistake has forever changed my life and the life of my family,” he said.

Munivez pleaded guilty Dec. 13 to two counts of extortion, admitting he used his access in the district attorney's office to obtain and sell fraudulent court documents for José Manuel “Meme” Longoria, convicted as Limas' middleman. He also admitted to providing information on a murder case in exchange for a $274 bicycle.

Ex-cop on trial for disciplining son with stick
By Zeke MacCormack - Express-News

NEW BRAUNFELS — The allowable limits of parental punishment are at issue in the trial of a former police officer who faces a felony charge for striking his son's head with a stick.

Michael B. Cochran, who served 15 years with New Braunfels police before his arrest last year, pleaded not guilty Wednesday to a charge of injury to a child with serious bodily injury.
Saying few facts are in dispute, defense attorney Scot Courtney told jurors in his opening statement,

“Indeed, Michael Cochran inflicted bodily harm on his child, in the form of discipline.”

Smart Power?

For a supposedly smart "off-the-charts" President he sure is stupid at times.

It was the Germans who ran the camps in Poland like Auchwitz, where my mother was a "guest" of the Nazis.

See?  The sign at the entrance to the camp is in German, not Polish, or "Austrian" (As President Obama once said the German-speaking Austrians spoke).

Polish Premier Demands U.S. Response to Obama Death Camp Remark
Poland demanded a “strong and clear response” from the U.S. after President Barack Obama’s mention of a “Polish death camp” while honoring a Pole who told the world about the Holocaust.

“We can’t accept such words in Poland, even if they are spoken by a leader of an allied country,” Prime Minister Donald Tusk told journalists in Warsaw today. “Saying Polish concentration camps is as if there was no German responsibility, no Hitler.”

Since, 2004 Poland has sought clarifications from several news outlets for the use of a phrase “Polish concentration camps” that were run by the Nazis during the country’s occupation in the World War II, according to the Foreign Ministry’s website. The government has convinced publications including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and the San Francisco Chronicle to stop using the phrase.

Tool-wielding robots crawl in bodies for surgery
By Kevin Begos - Associated Press

PITTSBURGH (AP) — Imagine a tiny snake robot crawling through your body, helping a surgeon identify diseases and perform operations.

It's not science fiction. Scientists and doctors are using the creeping metallic tools to perform surgery on hearts, prostate cancer, and other diseased organs. The snakebots carry tiny cameras, scissors and forceps, and even more advanced sensors are in the works. For now, they're powered by tethers that humans control. But experts say the day is coming when some robots will roam the body on their own.

"It won't be very long before we have robots that are nanobots, meaning they will actually be inside the body without tethers," said Dr. Michael Argenziano, the Chief of Adult Cardiac Surgery at New York-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center in New York.

Last week, sheriff’s deputies visited the woman and she was transported to the hospital, KENS reports. They had a warrant and were accompanied by Animal Control Services to seize the woman’s animals.

Pregnant Warren woman abducted, shot, and set on fire
By Mitch Hotts - The Macomb Daily

Warren police had one man in custody Saturday and were searching for a second suspect in connection with the abduction of a 22-year-old pregnant woman who was shot, set on fire and left to die.

The man in custody is a 22-year-old Warren resident who is the victim’s former boyfriend and father of her child, according to Warren Police Commissioner Jere Green. He said the woman, who is due to give birth in three weeks, is hospitalized but did not suffer life-threatening injuries.

“Although we’re told he saw her being abducted, the ex-boyfriend didn’t help her, he never called 911, he said he went to bed and went to sleep,” Green said. “So we have one in custody and obviously we’re still looking for a second man.”

10 reported dead in Italy 5.8 magnitude quake
By Colleen Barry - Associated Press

MILAN (AP) — A magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit northern Italy on Tuesday, killing at least 10 people in the same region still struggling to recover from another fatal tremor on May 20.

Premier Mario Monti pledged in a hastily called news conference that the government will do "all that it must and all that is possible in the briefest period to guarantee the resumption of normal life in this area that is so special, so important and so productive for Italy."

The quake, which struck just after 9:00 a.m. local time (0700 GMT), was centered 40 kilometers (25 miles) northwest of the city of Bologna, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It was just miles from where a 6.0 temblor killed seven people earlier this month. The quake was felt from Piedmont in northwestern Italy to Venice in the northeast, and as far north as Austria.

Mystery Biker Caught - Gave Speed Cameras The Finger
 agentgearusa.com -

The 17-year-old repeat offender drove at more than 100 kph through the southern German city's Richard Strauss Tunnel - often sticking his middle finger up towards the speed cameras.

His speed was so excessive that each race through the tunnel would earn him a months ban from the road - if only the police could catch him. But his souped-up bike had no plate, leaving the police unable to trace him.

The police finally snagged the rude teenager on the 26th time since mid-March. The teenager was hit with a fine, penalty points and a driving ban for each offense.

Iran has enough uranium for 5 bombs: Expert
Reuters -

(Reuters) - Iran has significantly stepped up its output of low-enriched uranium and total production in the last five years would be enough for at least five nuclear weapons if refined much further, a U.S. security institute said.

The Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS), a think-tank which tracks Iran's nuclear program closely, based the analysis on data in the latest report by the U.N. International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) which was issued on Friday.

Progress in Iran's nuclear activities is closely watched by the West and Israel as it could determine how long it could take Tehran to build atomic bombs, if it decided to do so. Iran denies any plan to and says its aims are entirely peaceful.

The Georgia woman, 26, was so determined to shoplift beer, bacon, cheese, and chicken wings from a Piggly Wiggly that she punched, spit at, and pepper-sprayed store workers who confronted her as she tried to flee the supermarket Wednesday afternoon, according to cops.

Appling, pictured in the adjacent mug shot, allegedly hid items worth $88.27 in a canvas bag. She “attempted to check out, only putting one item on the counter,” according to a worker quoted in an Athens-Clarke County Police Department report.

When a Piggly Wiggly employee--who had been tipped to the pilfering by a shopper--asked Appling about the concealed items, she tried to exit the store. After worker Jonathan Orr tried to stop Appling, she “pulled out some pepper spray and sprayed him in the face.”

BY DANIELA GUZMAN AND JULIE K. BROWN - Miami Herald

One man was shot to death by Miami police, and another man is fighting for his life after he was attacked and his face allegedly half eaten, by a naked man on the MacArthur Causeway off ramp, police said.

The bloodshed began about 2 p.m. when a series of gunshots were heard on the ramp, which is along NE 13th Street, just south of The Miami Herald building. Witnesses said a woman saw the two men fighting and flagged down a police officer who was in the area.

The officer, who has not been identified, approached and saw that the naked man was actually chewing the other man’s head, according to witnesses. The officer ordered the naked man to back away, and when he continued the assault, the officer shot him. The attacker continued to eat the man, despite being shot, forcing the officer to continue firing. Witnesses said they heard at least a half dozen shots.

President Obama won't be returning his donations from Bain Capital
By Hunter Walker - Politicker

Though the Obama campaign has repeatedly attacked Mitt Romney for his career at Bain Capital, President Obama still accepted $7,500 in campaign contributions from two Bain executives. His campaign press secretary, Ben LaBolt told The Politicker the president has no intention of giving the money back.

“No one aside from Mitt Romney is running for President highlighting their tenure as a corporate buyout specialist as one of job creation, when in fact, his goal was profit maximization,” said Mr. LaBolt.  ”The President has support from business leaders across industries who have seen him pull the economy back from the brink of another depression, manufacturing and the auto industry revived, and support his agenda to build an economy that lasts where America outinnovates and outeducates the rest of the world and economic security for the middle class is restored.”

On Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden defended the attacks on Mr. Romney’s tenure at Bain Capital. Though he insisted he wasn’t “criticizing private equity firms,” Mr. Biden said there were many examples of Mr. Romney and his Bain colleagues causing tremendous harm.

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – The CBS 3 I-Team has learned that a Catholic priest who was removed from the ministry over sex abuse allegations now holds a sensitive security post at Philadelphia International Airport.

The security checkpoint between Terminals D and E is a busy place where thousands of people – including lots of kids – pass through every day. But you might not believe who the I-Team observed working as a TSA supervisor at that checkpoint this week: Thomas Harkins.

Until 2002, Harkins was a Catholic priest working at churches across South Jersey. But the Diocese of Camden removed him from ministry because it found he sexually abused two young girls. Now, in a new lawsuit, a third woman is claiming she also is one of Harkins’ victims.

Can Ban suit banned in Austin

On it goes.

'Can Ban' in place as legal fight persists
By Kolten Parker - Express-News

AUSTIN — The “can ban” in place for the Comal and Guadalupe rivers remains adrift in legal waters, sent back to a Comal County court on Wednesday, where riverside businesses hope to sink the ordinance.

Travis County District Judge Scott Jenkins removed two state agencies from a lawsuit filed against New Braunfels by a coalition of businesses over the law banning disposable containers on the rivers — popular tubing routes.

Jenkins dismissed the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and the Texas General Land Office from the suit. This kept the ban in place and transferred the case back to a district court in Comal County. The case was originally moved to Travis County because a state agency was named as a defendant.

Bexar County is now the third metropolitan area in Texas with a Texas Department of Insurance-funded prosecutor solely devoted to “rooting out and convicting individuals committing insurance fraud,” District Attorney Susan Reed announced Wednesday during a press conference with insurance industry representatives.

The position, as well as an accompanying investigator job, will cost the state agency roughly $175,000 per year.

The overall goal, said Texas Department of Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman, is to eventually save taxpayers money on their own insurance bills by putting a large-enough dent in such crimes.

Man's defibrillator stops knife during attack
Associated Press -

SAN DIEGO (AP) — A man's implanted heart defibrillator may have saved his life in an unexpected way — by stopping a knife.

San Diego police say the 57-year-old got into an argument with an acquaintance early Thursday near some elevators at the trolley station for the Fashion Valley shopping mall.

Police say the acquaintance pulled a folding knife and stabbed the man in the chest. The knife hit the man's defibrillator, a device that shocks the heart if it gets dangerously out of rhythm.
