Why is this man smiling?

Thirteen and a half years, with six already served for stealing oil.

Probably has a bunch of money in a Swiss bank account waiting for him when he gets out.

Khodorkovsky in jail until 2017

by Tom Washington - The Moscow News

Mikhail Khodorkovsky has been sentenced to thirteen and a half years. Given the time he has already served he is facing another 6 years inside.

Judge Viktor Danilkin sentenced Russia’s most famous defendant to stay in prison until 2017. Platon Lebedev, Khodorkovsky’s co-defendant was sentenced to the same term.

Lengthy sentence

Both men have spent seven and a half years in prison already, for fraud and tax evasion after a trial in 2005.

The new sentence, for embezzling 218 million tonnes of oil from Yukos and laundering over 3 billion roubles ($97.5) will have kept them in prison for 14 years, including the term spent in pre-trial detention..

Judge Danilkin raced to get through the 250 page verdict as the defendants looked on impassively.

World circus

The trial has repeatedly been slated as a political stitch up. “It’s a nightmare, there are no words to describe it. It is a cruel, unfair and futile sentence, which shames our country, government and our justice system, which wouldn’t happen if there was independence [in the court system], an impassioned Lyudmila Alexeyeva told RIA Novosti.

The Kremlin has always denied claims of political involvement and told foreign critics to mind their own business. “Attempts to exert pressure on the court are unacceptable,” the foreign ministry announced, Agency France Presse reported.
