Jurors deliberating in Tejano star's injury trial
By Craig Kapitan - Express-NewsThe community needs to send Tejano star Emilio Navaira a strong message that it's not acceptable to get behind the wheel of a 30,000-pound tour bus while drunk, an attorney for his former bassist told a civil jury Friday, asking for nearly $1 million in lawsuit damages.
The bandleader's attorney, however, described the personal injury suit — which focuses on an Easter morning 2008 crash that occurred as Navaira was driving his band back to San Antonio from a gig in Houston — as a Brownsville-style courtroom money grab.
Jurors deliberated for nearly two hours Friday afternoon before state District Judge David Berchelmann allowed them to separate for the weekend.
