The idea was to run away to Colorado, where James Garza, 17, and Stephen Vogt, 19, could be together despite the wishes of their parents. There, Garza would continue his schooling so he could become a doctor.
But their grim strategy for accomplishing the goal included luring an acquaintance to a dark parking lot, stabbing him to death with a steak knife and stealing his car, prosecutors said Monday during opening statements for Garza's capital murder trial.
Garza, now 19, faces an automatic sentence of life without parole if jurors in the 290th state District Court find him guilty. Prosecutors opted not to pursue the death penalty.
