No fireworks for the Fourth

This area is like a tinderbox waiting for a match to set it all off.

Please do not set off fireworks this year here.

Otherwise have a safe and happy Fourth of July!

Fourth of July roundup of events

By Robert Johnson - Express-News

Last year, the only question was whether hurricane Alex would wash out our Fourth of July festivities. This year, a weak, early hurricane might be viewed as a savior.

For the first time anyone can remember, fireworks are banned for Monday's Independence Day festivities in San Antonio and Bexar County. And not just private displays. The city can't cap its traditional Woodlawn Lake blowout with some major pyro. Neither can the theme parks, after the city said last week it wouldn't approve ANY permits for fireworks displays, even those run by the pros.

Lackland and Randolph AFBs have followed suit, although they're not bound by the city's decision. Neighboring counties have passed their own bans, and most — but not all — area municipalities also will have fireworks-free festivities.
