Ripping out the town's heart

Happy Valentine's Day.

Town of Valentine may lose the post office at its very heart

VALENTINE — By rough estimate, Maria Carrasco, the longtime postmaster in this fading West Texas ranching town, has put special postmarks on about a half-million Valentine's Day cards sent here by romantics the world over.

“Canada is the most prominent foreign country. Africa surprised me when I saw it for the first time,” she remarked during a visit last week.

And while the vast majority of the cards sent here are affectionate personal gestures, among the more noteworthy recipients have been Queen Elizabeth of England, Chelsea Clinton and O.J. Simpson during his murder trial.
