Reefer truck busted

Something else getting "extradited" here from Mexico.

CBP finds 'reefer truck' full of marijuana
By Lynn Brezosky - Express-News

BROWNSVILLE — Customs officers in Pharr seized more than a ton of marijuana from a “utility reefer trailer” in the cargo lot of an international bridge, Customs and Border Protection said Wednesday.

The seizure occurred Friday, after officers at the Pharr-Reynosa International Bridge referred a refrigerated (“reefer” in CBP parlance) tractor-trailer for further inspection.

Officers found 423 packages of alleged marijuana with a total weight of 2,465 pounds.

Welcome back!

Great news!

Now here in Comal County we're waiting to hear about an extradition on Lee Roy Suarez who murdered someone, stabbed the deceased's brother, here in New Braunfels and then fled to Mexico back in 2004.

This gives me hope we will get his extradition granted.

Suspect in Juarez consulate killings extradited

An alleged prison gang member wanted in connection with the killing of a U.S. consulate employee, her husband and another employee's spouse has been extradited to the United States, Mexican authorities have announced.

Joel Abraham Caudillo was handed over to FBI agents Dec. 20 in Veracruz at the same time that Julian “El Piolin” Zapata Espinoza, wanted in the February killing of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agent Jaime Zapata, was extradited. Mexican authorities announced Caudillo's extradition this week.

He's one of 35 people charged in a drug conspiracy case that alleges that the Barrio Azteca prison gang, working with the Juárez Cartel, engaged in drug trafficking and murder on both sides of the Rio Grande.

Colombian city gets giant, outdoor escalator
Associated Press -

BOGOTA, Colombia (AP) — Officials in Colombia's second-largest city on Monday inaugurated a giant, outdoor escalator for residents of one of its poorest neighborhoods.

For generations, the 12,000 residents of Medellin's tough Comuna 13, which clings to the side of a steep hillside, have had to climb hundreds of large steps authorities say is the same as going up a 28-story building.

Now they can ride an escalator Medellin's mayor says is the first massive, outdoor public escalator for use by residents of a poor area.

Seven Texas Syndicate members denied bond
By Guillermo Contreras -Express-News

A judge Tuesday denied bond for seven purported members of the Texas Syndicate who were indicted in a racketeering case that includes four murders.

Among them was the gang's alleged chairman for its operations outside prison in San Antonio, Ruben “R.C.” Carranza, 46, who explained to U.S. Magistrate Judge John Primomo that he had been arrested in a Bexar County rape case after being released on parole from state custody.

Primomo noted it was unlikely any of the seven would get bond in the federal case since most were in state custody on other charges or facing possible parole revocations. He set their arraignments for Jan. 10.

Christmas burglars steal presents, family pet
L.A. Times -

A Northern California family victimized in a burglary a few days before Christmas is hoping to at least get their dog back.

The Lancers lost all of the presents under the tree along with their dog when their home in Morgan Hill, southeast of San Jose, was broken into last week, authorities said Sunday.

"It's a very unfortunate thing that somebody would steal from a family, especially at this time of year," said Santa Clara County sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza.

Colorado man returns $10,000 found at Vegas
Associated Press -

GREENWOOD VILLAGE, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado man who found $10,000 before boarding a flight in Las Vegas says he returned the money to the owner because he wanted to show his children it was "the right thing to do."

Greenwood Village resident Mitch Gilbert told KUSA-TV he found two unmarked Caesar's Palace envelopes at the airport and realized there was money inside when he arrived home. The television station reported Monday ( ) that Gilbert called the airport and eventually got in touch with a man from El Paso, Texas, who reported the money missing.

Gilbert says he deposited the money in the man's bank account two days before Christmas. The man told the television station he won the money gambling and dropped it while running to catch a flight.

Dogging the thieves

I doubt the dogs will be found after all this time.

Stranger things have happened and Ms. Riley sure seems to be very persistent.

All she wants is stolen Yorkies back
By Cathy M. Rosenthal - Express-News

For Peggy Riley, the theft of her two 9-year-old Yorkshire Terriers, Baxter and Cooper, is still painful to talk about. She tears up quickly at the mention of their names.

“You would think after 71/2 months I could pull myself together,” Riley says. “It's just hard not knowing where they are and if they're OK.”

Riley's dogs were stolen from inside her home during a robbery on April 22. The dogs had just returned from the groomers, so perhaps they looked like puppies to the thieves.

Fence beside airstrip at root of dispute
Guadalupe County officials accused of RICO violations.
By Zeke MacCormack - Express-News

ZUEHL — A fence erected in 2008 beside a rural airfield here in southwest Guadalupe County has spurred a rash of lawsuits, the latest of which accuses dozens of county officials of engaging in organized crime and seeks $31 million in damages.

The defendants deny the allegations made by New Braunfels resident David Goad, whose prior self-drafted court pleadings led to his being declared a vexatious litigant.

Goad filed the newest suit in U.S. District Court on Dec. 8 on behalf of two daughters who own a 1-acre lot that once housed a fueling station used by the Zuehl Flying Community.

"We think he was just inside there celebrating Christmas with the rest of them and decided for whatever reason that's how he's going to end things," Eberling told The Associated Press.

Gingrich attacks Virginia for keeping him off the ballot
By Libby Quaid - Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — Presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich’s campaign attacked Virginia’s GOP primary election system on Saturday for keeping him off the state’s March 6 Super Tuesday ballot, a significant setback for a candidate who has surged in popularity but has struggled to organize his campaign.

The state party said that Gingrich had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures to appear on the ballot. Texas Gov. Rick Perry also failed to qualify, the Virginia GOP said.

The Gingrich campaign responded that “only a failed system” would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates. It said Gingrich would pursue an aggressive write-in campaign in Virginia.

“Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates,” Gingrich campaign director Michael Krull said in a statement.

Police received a tip off from someone who said they had seen a man and a woman rooting around under a tree-seller's tarpaulin at Vaksala Torg in central Uppsala.

”It was a couple in their thirties that dragged off three Christmas trees that one of the sellers had left at the square,” said Sundin to the paper.

1941 fruitcake in Ohio sells for $525
By Lisa Cornwell - Associated Press

CINCINNATI (AP) — A 1941 fruitcake has sold for $525 to an Arizona man in an online auction and the money will be used to benefit the homeless in southwest Ohio.

Elite Estate Group sold the cake in an auction on its website that ended Thursday night. Company owner Larry Chaney said the man who bought the cake asked that his name not be released.

"I believe he probably bought it as an investment," said Chaney, adding that he doubts anyone would eat a 70-year-old fruitcake even though it was vacuum packed and contained rum that probably helped preserve it.

A man who pulled a gun on another driver, then chased him more than 10 miles into the parking lot of a police substation — all because he thought the driver had tried to rob him during a drug deal — apologized when he realized it was a case of mistaken identity, officials said.

“Oh, man, that's not the right guy,” the armed man told officers after his arrest.

The bizarre tale began on the West Side on South General McMullen Drive and ended when the driver of the car being chased sped into the parking lot of the Police Department's East Substation on Houston Street after 7 p.m., just as Officer Louis Esquivel was leaving after his shift.

While dreams of Santa popping down the chimney on Christmas Eve to deliver presents were extinguished for most during childhood, a select few Bellevue residents have seen St. Nick trade in his sleigh for a mail truck.

For more than a decade now, letter carrier Bob McLean has driven around Bellevue each holiday season, delivering a little Christmas cheer while wearing a full Santa getup for two or three days. But this year, a local grinch complained to the U.S. Postal Service, and McLean has been banned from bringing his alter ego to work this year.

Pa. smoke shop has Santa huff on a hookah
Associated Press -

GREENVILLE, Pa. (AP) — A northwestern Pennsylvania tobacco shop is turning the image of the jovial, pipe-smoking Santa on its head by having Saint Nick huff on a hookah.

Up In Smoke store manager Sue Stoyer says that customer reaction to the display has been mixed. But she notes that many early depictions of Santa Claus have him puffing on a pipe.

Clement Moore's "A Visit from St. Nicholas" includes a reference to the jolly old elf clenching a pipe in his teeth, with a ring of smoke around his head.

The tiny town's holiday parade earlier this month made the window a source of both amusement and scorn. But Stoyer shrugs off any criticism. She says Santa's history as a smoker is on the shop's side.

Sheriff:  Ohio man cleaning gun killed Amish girl
Associated Press -

FREDERICKSBURG, Ohio (AP) -- A man cleaning his muzzle-loading rifle shot the gun into the air, accidentally killing a 15-year-old Amish girl driving a horse-drawn buggy more than a mile away, a sheriff said Tuesday.

Rachel Yoder was shot in the head Thursday night while traveling to her home in Wayne County, between Columbus and Akron. She had attended a Christmas party for employees, most of them under 18 years old, at an Amish produce farm and was riding home alone when she was shot, Wayne County sheriff's Capt. Douglas Hunter said.

The horse continued to cart the girl after she was shot, and she fell out of the buggy near her home, Holmes County Sheriff Timothy Zimmerly said. Her brother found her after he saw the horse walking in circles and went to check it. Authorities initially believed she had fallen out of the buggy and hit her head until a hospital test revealed the gunshot wound.

South Korea, anxious about the untested, 20-something Kim Jong Un after his father's 17-year rule, put its military on high alert against the North's 1.2 million-strong armed forces. President Barack Obama agreed by phone with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak to closely monitor developments.

Thief injured attempting to steal copper wire from school
CBSMiami -

MIAMI GARDENS (CBS4) – A thief apparently looking to steal copper from equipment on the roof of a Miami-Dade school fell more than two stories, a debilitating plunge that left him unable to walk, apparently with a broken hip or leg.

The hapless Spiderman was captured by security cameras at Charles Wyche Elementary School in Miami Gardens.  He arrives, wearing a ski mask, and begins to arrange ropes he’s carrying for a climb up the outside wall of the school to the roof, more than two stories above.   Moments later a second camera angle shows the man falling to the ground – a drop of more than 25 feet – where he begins to writhe in pain.  The intruder dragged himself out on to a walkway and attempted to stand up, but immediately fell back down.  He then dragged himself on his belly out of the school, pushing a pair of bolt cutters in front of him.

“He was trying to get on the roof of the school to commit copper theft,” said schools police Sergeant Ivan Silva.  “As you can see from the video, he’s not the most skillful burglar.”

Delores Gillespie, 64, was on her way home from buying groceries when she stepped out of the elevator at 203 Underhill Ave. in Prospect Heights and into a carefully laid trap.

Minutes earlier, Gillespie’s attacker had glued shut the locks on the elderly woman’s fifth-floor apartment and doused the elevator door with accelerant, sources said.
