Expediency, throw out the Constitution.
Means justifying the Ends?
I'm torn on this issue, on the one hand a country has the right to secure its borders on the other hand where do we lose that intangible something that defined America as the hope of the downtrodden and poor?
We get plenty of illegal immigrants who get caught up in doing drugs and other crimes, incarcerate them and send them back is fine with me.
Someone who is trying to better their lot in life? I think we can do better. A big part of the blame, IMHO lies with the government of Mexico who seem quite content in not addressing their internal problems and letting people flee to the U.S. to escape grinding poverty and hopeless futures for their children.
I would like to hear one of the nay sayers say they wouldn't try to do the same if they were caught up in the same system as those trying to escape it. We need to address the problem, perhaps a guest worker system would work. heck, have them pay taxes on their wages too, just like the rest of us.
We need to do something, folks breaking the laws are not good for the system.
Okay, rant over.
Border crackdown fills jails

LAREDO — After pleading guilty to entering the country illegally, the Mexican immigrant from Veracruz told a federal judge here last week he came to the U.S. to earn money to pay for his mother's funeral.
"It doesn't matter if you're trying to pay off funeral expenses or take care of a sick family member," said U.S. Magistrate Diana Saldaña, referring to another immigrant. "When you cross the Rio Grande, you're going to be spending time in prison if the Border Patrol finds you — that's the bottom line."
