A man has been charged with stalking after a 14-year-old Sydney girl was followed for 30 minutes and repeatedly urged to get into a car.

The teenager, from Colyton in Sydney's west, was walking from St Marys railway station towards the Great Western Highway when she was approached by a man driving a Ford Falcon, police said.

"Police will allege that the man offered the girl a lift several times which she declined on each occasion," police said in a statement today.

"He allegedly followed her as she walked along the highway for half an hour, attempting to coerce her into the car."

The man eventually drove off and the girl contacted police.

Officers arrested a 36-year-old Colyton man at his home about 6am (AEDT) on Tuesday and charged him with stalk/intimidation with intent to cause fear of physical/mental harm.

He has been granted conditional bail to appear at Penrith Local Court on February 3.
