A tawdry affair this is.
Court papers detail case-runner's contacts
EDINBURG — In late 2006, Newton Schwartz Sr., a hard-charging personal injury lawyer from Houston, traveled to the Rio Grande Valley for a closer look at an intriguing business opportunity being dangled by Willie Garcia.
Garcia, well-known as the biggest case-runner in South Texas, was looking to extend his contacts among the more than 50 Mexican consulates in the United States, and needed a backer, Schwartz recalled.
“Say some guy from Mexico gets hurt in Omaha, Neb. Willie gets a call,” explained Schwartz, 79. “He wanted $4 million to $5 million to expand his network. He named some places, like Alabama and Georgia.”
