Archdiocese goes on trial in abuse case
By Abe Levy - Express-News

Jury selection begins today in the Bexar County trial of a lawsuit accusing the Archdiocese of San Antonio of covering up a former priest's sexual abuse of an altar boy in Floresville in the mid-1970s.

Louis Paul White repeatedly sexually abused a then-12-year-old boy, the lawsuit claims, chiding the Catholic hierarchy for waiting until 1989 to defrock White and until only three years ago to publicize his name as an accused child molester.

White, now 69, was an associate pastor at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Floresville from 1976 to 1977, when the alleged abuse took place. The lawsuit claims that he molested the boy in White's bedroom, a shop at the rectory and the church itself — up to three times a week for six months.

Portland police shorten hours at Laurelhurst Park after reports of of group of teen boys attacking others
The Oregonian -

Portland's bureaus of Police and Parks will join forces this weekend to increase security in Laurelhurst Park after reports of two large-scale fights there Wednesday and Thursday nights.

According to those who reported the incidents to police, both assaults involved a large group of teenage boys who attacked either an individual or a small group.

Police say they learned of the first incident Wednesday evening when called to the Southeast Portland park about 10:36 p.m. to investigate a report of 150 drunken teens. When they arrived, they told the teens they found to leave. But they were then flagged down by a young woman who told them that a 14-year-old boy had been beaten up and was lying on a picnic table at the west end of the park.

An East Hartford man has called 911 to complain that a deli fouled up his sandwich order.

Audio: Listen to the 911 call

The man can be heard on a recording of Wednesday’s call complaining that he “specifically asked for little turkey and little ham, a lot of cheese and a lot of mayonnaise,” and the Grateful Deli in East Hartford got it wrong.

The dispatcher asked the man to verify that he was calling 911 because he didn’t like the way they made his sandwich.

The man replied, “Exactly.”

The dispatcher advised him not to buy it.

No charges have been filed.

Patricide

This is what caused a murder at a family barbecue?

The father was too tired after working to help barbecue so the son gets into a fight with him, goes into the apartment, comes out with a gun, and shoots him?

Sounds like he needs to be removed from society for, umm... at least forever.

City vote moves Ramen plant deal forward
By Vicki Vaughan - Express-News

The City Council approved an ordinance Thursday in which it agreed not to annex, for a five-year period, a $325 million food manufacturing plant that is planned for Southwest Bexar County.

The council's vote was unanimous and was made without discussion. District 4 councilman Rey Saldaña was absent.

Officials with Japan-based Maruchan Inc., which plans to build a Ramen noodle plant outside city limits, have said the plant would employ as many as 600 workers. The plant's location in Bexar County near Interstate 35 and Loop 410 is ideal for sending its products to the U.S. Midwest and to Mexico, company officials said.

Sorry, perhaps you shouldn't have spent all your money on your defense attorney at trial.

It also probably didn't help that you have an appellate attorney from one of the more expensive criminal defense firms in San Antonio as well.

No relief for killer claiming poverty
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News

When Alamo Heights resident Jon Thomas Ford went to trial for murder last February, he had by his side Dick DeGuerin, one of the most prominent — and, presumably, most expensive — criminal defense lawyers in Texas.

But now Ford is broke, his new appellate attorneys said Thursday as he returned to court to ask the judge to waive a $15,000 bill for a transcript of the monthlong trial that ended with his conviction.

State District Judge Maria Teresa Herr denied the request after about two hours of testimony in which prosecutors suggested Ford's father was hiding assets to make the defendant look less wealthy — perhaps in an effort to shield him from a potential wrongful-death lawsuit. The father vehemently denied the accusation.
