NEW BRAUNFELS — New Braunfels police took a murder suspect into custody just hours after a warrant for his arrest was issued in connection with the New Year’s Day death of Melissa Eason.

At approximately 6:07 p.m. Friday, Nathaniel “Nate” Fox, 27, of New Braunfels was arrested at Bob’s Billiards after he contacted a citizen at this location expressing his desire to turn himself in for his warrant.

Fox was taken into custody without incident and taken to Comal County Sherriff’s Office.

With President Obama having kicked off debt ceiling negotiations by vowing not to negotiate over the debt ceiling, a new option for paying off the nation’s considerable tab is gaining momentum with cheeky fiscal and monetary wonks.

It goes like this: Should Congress fail to extend the U.S. debt limit — reached again on Dec. 31 — the president could ask the Treasury to begin printing trillion dollar coins (in a process explained mostly seriously by Jim Pethokoukis on his American Enterprise Institute blog), a number of which could then be put toward fulfilling debt obligations in the event new legislation stalls in Congress.

While there are laws in place to regulate how much paper, gold, silver or copper currency can be circulated by the government, there is nothing so clearly stated when it comes to platinum. That door open, the Treasury could have the U.S. Mint melt and mold a few trillion dollars of it, then ship the goods over to the Federal Reserve for safekeeping until the time comes to pay the bills.

Condemned Mexican Mafia member loses appeal

A Mexican Mafia member condemned to die for the strangulation of a woman because she failed to pay the “dime” tax on her drug sale proceeds has lost another federal appeal.

Manuel Vasquez, 44, was one of three men, some of whom also were alleged to have been members of the prison gang, arrested in the 1998 killing of Juanita Ybarra, 51, and beating of her boyfriend.

In his appeal to the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, Vasquez claimed prosecutors withheld notes from an interview with Ybarra's boyfriend; he cited ineffective assistance of counsel and argued that one of his partners in the crime lied on the stand.

Reward increased for Most Wanted fugitive

The reward for a Top 10 Most Wanted Fugitive who was last seen 14 years ago has been increased to $17,500, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.

Jesus Alberto Villegas, 33, is wanted on warrants out of Taylor County on charges of sexual assault of a child, felony theft and a prohibited weapons violation.

Villegas, also known as “Pecas,” is described as 5-foot-11 and 145 pounds, with a tattoo on his back, according to DPS.

County to seek appeal of cuts to Krueger Dam

NEW BRAUNFELS — Comal County commissioners voted Thursday to appeal a decision by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to cut expected funding for the county’s Krueger Canyon dam project by $7 million.

“I think we should (appeal),” said Commissioner Kevin Webb, who made the motion to move forward with the appeal during his first meeting since being elected in 2012 to the Precinct 3 seat on the county’s governing body.

County Judge Sherman Krause explained that FEMA decided to cut funding from $12.25 million to $5.25 million based on an audit of the dam project west of New Braunfels by the federal Office of Inspector General (OIG), which raised questions about the dam’s benefit/cost ratio.

Woman, 25, dies on Texas-bound flight from Brazil

HOUSTON (AP) — An American Airlines flight from Brazil to Dallas was diverted to Houston on Wednesday after a 25-year-old passenger became ill and died aboard the aircraft, police said.

Airport officials summoned homicide detectives to George Bush Intercontinental Airport just before dawn after learning that American Flight 962 was coming to Houston because of a medical emergency involving a passenger. The passenger was declared dead after the plane landed, authorities said.

"There was no sign of trauma," and no foul play is suspected, Houston police spokeswoman Jodi Silva said. An autopsy will be done, she said.

Jones sees 'uncomfortable' off-season of change ahead for Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones stressed on his radio show Wednesday that missing the playoffs a third straight season has created angst within the franchise and will force him to make some moves.

“I can tell you change is necessary at 8-8,” Jones said. “Change is in order when you spend (the last) two seasons in a row (going) down to the last two games and lose them. So we're going to have to have changes.”

The NFC East title was at stake Sunday night, but the Cowboys fell 28-18 at Washington after Tony Romo threw three interceptions and the defense allowed rookie Alfred Morris to rush for 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Murder suspect kills himself

Moments before Cynthia Jean Goodrum's funeral began Wednesday in her hometown of Edinburg, her husband and suspected killer fatally shot himself after a short police chase in Las Vegas, officials said.

Narada K'fonse Goodrum, 33, had been on the run since last week, when he allegedly shot his pregnant wife inside her West Bexar County home.

Around 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, he apparently committed suicide after a foot pursuit that began when officials with the U.S. Marshals and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, who had been tracking his movements, arrived at a Super 8 motel near Las Vegas Boulevard to serve a murder warrant.

NEW BRAUNFELS — New Braunfels police were on the scene of a possible homicide Tuesday afternoon at a residence two blocks off I-35.

“We have a deceased female,” said police Lt. Michael Penshorn, who was at the scene at approximately 4 p.m. at 211C E. Merriweather St., where a crowd of approximately 20, including two women who were weeping, had gathered in the street and nearby yards.

Inside, the body of 27-year-old Melissa Eason of New Braunfels was discovered.

Obama Returns to Hawaii at an Added Cost of Over $3 Million

In a move that is rich in irony, President Obama agreed Tuesday night to sign an emergency deficit reduction bill that does almost nothing to rein in spending and then jetted out to Hawaii to resume his vacation at an extra cost of more than $3 million to taxpayers.

The price tag is in addition to more than $4 million that is already being spent on the Obamas’ Hawaii idyll, bringing the total cost of the excursion to well over $7 million.

The added cost was incurred because by the time the Obamas return from Hawaii – whenever that is – the president will have used Air Force One to travel to Honolulu and back twice.

I believe if it went down as reported the officer has nothing to be concerned abous aas he reacted appropriately to the perceived threat.

I would still present it to a Grand Jury to "no-bill" the officer and there would be no problem for the officer returning to duty.


Tyler officer shoots man who points gun at him

TYLER, Texas (AP) — Tyler police say an officer shot to death a man who pointed a handgun at him as police responded to a call about numerous gunshots at a home.

When police responded around midnight on New Year's Eve, they heard gunshots coming from behind the home. Seeing a man with a weapon, officers identified themselves and told him to drop the weapon. The man did not do as instructed and went into the home.

Police say officer Matt Riggle then moved to the back door, continuing to tell 22-year-old Victor Fuentes to drop the weapon. When Fuentes pointed a handgun at him, Riggle fired his rifle several times, striking Fuentes, who was pronounced dead at the scene. A revolver was located on the floor next to Fuentes.

Tasered teen faces robbery, escape charges

Bond had not been set Tuesday night for a teenager who escaped police custody at a hospital after being arrested on a charge of aggravated robbery.

Tyrone G. Farias, 19, remained in the Bexar County Jail Tuesday after he was arrested without incident at a home in the 100 block of Dokes Drive on warrants for a first-degree felony charge of aggravated robbery and a third-degree felony charge of escaping, police said.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit detailing the events that led to Farias' charges, he was stopped by an officer in the 2400 block of Ruiz Street about 3 a.m. Tuesday as he was robbing someone at gunpoint.

Bill to avert fiscal cliff heads to House

WASHINGTON (AP) — Legislation to negate a fiscal cliff of across-the-board tax increases and sweeping spending cuts to the Pentagon and other government agencies is headed to the GOP-dominated House after bipartisan, middle-of-the-night approval in the Senate capped a New Year's Eve drama unlike any other in the annals of Congress.

The measure cleared the Senate on an 89-8 vote early Tuesday, hours after Vice President Joe Biden and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky sealed a deal.

It would prevent middle-class taxes from going up but would raise rates on higher incomes. It would also block spending cuts for two months, extend unemployment benefits for the long-term jobless, prevent a 27 percent cut in fees for doctors who treat Medicare patients and prevent a spike in milk prices.

NEW BRAUNFELS — New Braunfels police reported eight weekend car burglaries, including two in which vandals made off with firearms.

The driver of a Ford F-150 parked in the 1500 block of I-35 north discovered Saturday morning that burglars had smashed a window and made off with a Remington .30-06 bolt-action rifle with scope valued at $1,350, a .22-caliber Marlin semi-automatic rifle with scope valued at $700, and a Benelli 12-gauge pump-action shotgun valued at $500.

On Sunday morning in the 1400 block of South Seguin Avenue, the driver of a Ford F-250 found that his door lock had been punched and that thieves had taken his H&R 12-gauge shotgun.

Death took many friends and others loved ones.   The election dragged on; the economy dragged on,  and I had surgeries on my hands.

Anyway, I am here eager to step forward into whatever 2013 has in store for us and to perservere no matter how bleak it may get.  I, of course, am hoping it isn't a bleak one for any of you nor of me.
