Jury orders 15-year sentence for DWI death
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News
A church deacon from Schertz who killed a pedestrian last year while driving drunk was sentenced Friday to 15 years in prison.
Jurors in the 227th state District Court also decided Gregory Everett Mitchell,
who they found guilty Thursday, used his SUV as a deadly weapon. That
means he will have to serve at least half the sentence before he can
apply for parole.
Ryan Bettcher,
29, also of Schertz, was walking to a friend's house along Airline
Boulevard in Universal City in May 2011 when he was hit by Mitchell, 49,
who authorities said swerved about 15 feet off the road.
