A half century in prison

It was a very busy day at the Comal County Courthouse yesterday.

Local man gets 50 years for murder

A New Braunfels man was sentenced to 50 years in prison Thursday, more than a month after a Comal County jury found him guilty of murdering his live-in girlfriend’s brother.

Edwardo Sanchez, 26, was found guilty July 2 of driving a knife through 37-year-old Fernando Ortegon’s heart and back, killing him in the early morning hours of March 23, 2008.

His punishment was set July 2 for 207th District Judge Jack Robison to decide.

Ortegon was found lying dead on the 1100 block of Winston Avenue in the Walnut Mobile Home Community off Interstate 35 frontage road. Officers responding to the aggravated assault call about 1 a.m. found Ortegon with two stab wounds.

Witnesses at the scene — including Ortegon’s sister and Sanchez’s girlfriend, Oralia Alvarado — told police that Sanchez stabbed Ortegon during a heated argument.

He was facing anywhere from five to 99 years in prison after being found guilty of murder.

Robison also ordered Sanchez to pay a $10,000 fine.
