Prosecutors target repeat deportees
Express-News

Increased federal funding to combat unauthorized immigration has produced a growing number of criminal prosecutions of previously deported persons caught illegally in the country again, officials say.

In a news release, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement indicated that 3,831 such repeat deportees have been prosecuted for felony illegal re-entry since October, including 222 cases from the agency's San Antonio office.

That is more than double the 1,808 prosecutions last year. The agency noted an increased focus on targeting deportees with prior violent convictions.

The program, dubbed Operation Repeat Offender, was launched in February in five ICE offices but has now been expanded nationally.
