Ramon Hernandez is set to be executed Wednesday for the 2001 abduction, rape and killing of Rosa Maria Rosado.

But the man prosecutors have called a serial rapist and murderer is known to have other victims.

Federal crackdown targets Aryan prison gang across state
By James Pinkerton - Houston Chronicle

Federal agents are arresting dozens of Texas members of the white supremacist Aryan Brotherhood gang — including four in San Antonio — on federal racketeering charges in crimes including murder, kidnapping, arson, gambling and trafficking in methamphetamine and cocaine.

In all, 34 members of the Aryan Brotherhood of Texas are named in a lengthy federal indictment unsealed Friday by Justice Department prosecutors in Houston, described as an effort to deal a major blow against a racist gang known for its violence.

“Today's takedown represents a devastating blow to the leadership of ABT,” Lanny Breuer, assistant attorney general, said at a news conference announcing the arrests.

Defendant sentenced to 30 years for aggravated sexual assault

There are many reasons to enter into a plea bargain arrangement.

Some include finality of the sentence, in other words the Defendant cannot appeal the sentence, saving the county the expense of a trial and a long appellate process.  Another aspect could be sparing the victim the ordeal of a trial and having to testify.

I am not suggesting any of these as why a plea bargain was entered here.  However, he has been sentenced to do 30 years in prison on each count, which run at the same time.  However, as there was an affirmative finding of the use of a deadly weapon, he will have to spend at least 15 years in prison before he could even be considered eligible to be paroled.   He will be 65 years old before that happens.

Also eligibility for parole does not mean he will be paroled; especially because of the nature of the offenses he was convicted of.

Man pleads guilty in rape
By Dalondo Moultrie - New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung

NEW BRAUNFELS — A New Braunfels man pleaded guilty in Comal County court on Thursday to aggravated sexual assault and assault of a family or house member impeding breath or circulation with prior conviction.

James Allen Combs, 50, held a knife to the throat of his victim when he raped her in February at his home, a Comal County assistant district attorney said after Combs entered his plea.

“One night he got drunk and raped her at knifepoint,” said Steven Harkins, assistant district attorney. “While she was trying to take care of herself and was in shock, he came in the bathroom and started to abuse her. She managed to get right outside (the home) when witnesses heard her scream.”

Purported Texas Syndicate leader pleads guilty in racketeering case

The instruction came straight out of “Africa” — not the continent, but gangspeak for the Coffield Unit, a state prison near Tyler.

A hit had been authorized on a then-leader of operations for the Texas Syndicate in San Antonio, Andrew “Dirty” Vidaurri.

Days later, gang operatives met near San Antonio to discuss how it would go down and a hit squad of gang prospects was dispatched to a West Side home July 2, 2011.

Suspect in bomb threats is a student at OLLU
By Eva Ruth Moravec - Express-News

Emailed bomb threats that prompted evacuations at Texas State University in San Marcos last month were sent from a computer in a dorm at San Antonio's Our Lady of the Lake University, according to a federal affidavit unsealed this week.

As of Oct. 15, Dereon Jayronne Kelly, 22, also known as Dereon Tayronne Kelley, was enrolled at OLLU and lived in The Providence Dorm, the affidavit says. A university spokesman confirmed he is a current student who transferred there in late August.

Kelly is accused of using a computer on the dorm's third floor to send three emails Oct. 18 and 19 to a Texas State employee who works from her home in Harris County.

Mistrial in lavish party case

Mistrial declared for ex-S.A. employee
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News

A deadlocked jury resulted in a mistrial Wednesday night in the trial of Jeanetta Tinsley, a former San Antonio department head accused of squandering $16,000 in taxpayer money on a lavish going-away party for her predecessor.

State District Judge Juanita Vasquez-Gardner dismissed the jury after roughly eight hours of unproductive deliberations. The charge remains pending.

Tinsley, 43, was fired from the city's Office of Grants Monitoring and Administration in 2009, months after investigators determined that U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development grant money went to a swank downtown hotel, a band, an ice sculpture, valet parking and a group dinner at the Plaza Club.

Things Walmart frowns on:  Trying to pay $2 for a $228 TV
By John Nova Lomax - Houston Press Blogs

Fans of the old BBC comedy Blackadder will remember Blackadder's humorously idiotic servant Baldrick and his evermore ridiculous "cunning plans."

Baldrick's spirit lives on in an Abilene Walmart, where on Friday 52-year-old William Keltner had a "cunning plan" of his own.

According to KTXS, Keltner's alleged plan was as follows.
1. Take a TV worth $228 and put it in a cart.
2. Take off the TV's real barcode and replace it with one valued at $1.17 and take it through a self-checkout line.
3. ????
4. Profit!

Judge sets hearing in $4 million seizure
By Guillermo Contreras - Express-News

A federal judge has set a hearing Nov. 19 to take up a request for a court order instructing the district attorney's office, the Texas attorney general's office and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration to return more than $4 million to a Mexican businessman.

The agencies seized the assets from Jose Villarreal Saldivar, after raiding his home in The Dominion while acting on suspicions that he's involved in money laundering.

Villarreal, a U.S. citizen who was adopted shortly after birth by Mexican parents, has not been charged with a crime, and denies the allegations.

Deputy killer's wife sentenced
By Cindy Horswell - Houston Chronicle

Pamela Leggett-Ortez sobbed uncontrollably in a Houston federal courtroom Monday, asking for leniency for her role in the deadly shooting of a Chambers County deputy at her home, where authorities found a stockpile of 120 homemade bombs.

At her sentencing, Leggett-Ortez made her first public comments since the death three years ago of Deputy Shane Detwiler.

“I'm so sorry,” she said, contending that she, too, had been victimized — abused for years — by her husband. Gilbert “Tuffy” Ortez Jr. fatally shot Detwiler before committing suicide.

Man sentenced for stealing lobsters for drug habit
Associated Press -

ALLENTOWN, Pa. (AP) — A Pennsylvania man could spend up to 25 years in prison for stealing lobsters he planned to sell to support his drug habit.

Authorities say 47-year-old Charles Shumanis III repeatedly stole lobsters and meat from Allentown-area supermarkets, including a botched March 1 theft that included a parking lot car-jacking.

Police say Shumanis stole meat and lobsters on two other occasions before he was confronted when he walked out of the store with $350 in lobsters.
