Lost, covered in his own blood and unsure if the men who hunted him were still nearby, a man from South Carolina hid in the forested hills outside Caldwell until after dark on Nov. 6. Deciding it was safe, he then made a painful 2-mile journey to the nearest farmhouse to call for help.
Investigators say he was the lucky one.

GEe whiz!

Gee.  GE.

Forget Wall Street, someone occupy General Electric.

GE Filed 57,000-Page Tax Return, Paid No Taxes on $14 Billion in Profits
By John McCormack - The Weekly Standard -

General Electric, one of the largest corporations in America, filed a whopping 57,000-page federal tax return earlier this year but didn't pay taxes on $14 billion in profits. The return, which was filed electronically, would have been 19 feet high if printed out and stacked.

The fact that GE paid no taxes in 2010 was widely reported earlier this year, but the size of its tax return first came to light when House budget committee chairman Paul Ryan (R, Wisc.) made the case for corporate tax reform at a recent townhall meeting. "GE was able to utilize all of these various loopholes, all of these various deductions--it's legal," Ryan said. Nine billion dollars of GE's profits came overseas, outside the jurisdiction of U.S. tax law. GE wasn't taxed on $5 billion in U.S. profits because it utilized numerous deductions and tax credits, including tax breaks for investments in low-income housing, green energy, research and development, as well as depreciation of property.

"I asked the GE tax officer, 'How long was your tax form?'" Ryan said. "He said, 'Well, we file electronically, we don't measure in pages.'" Ryan asked for an estimate, which came back at a stunning 57,000 pages. When Ryan relayed the story at the townhall meeting in Janesville, there were audible gasps from the crowd.

"Stolen valor" convict back in jail
By  Guillermo Contreras - Express-News

Army veteran Brian Culp of San Antonio, who pleaded guilty to falsely claiming to be a highly decorated U.S. Army Ranger, is back behind bars.

Probation officers are seeking to revoke the supervised release of Culp, 41, saying he violated probation on a nine-month jail sentence, part of which he served. They allege he failed to inform the office that he was moving, failed to show up for at least one mental-health treatment session, and failed to meet in person with his probation officer as required.

At a hearing Tuesday, U.S. Magistrate Judge Nancy Nowak said “based on what I heard today, I find there is probable cause generally as to failing to report.”

Texas cop catches arrested, handcuffed couple engaged in sex act in back seat of police car
The Smoking Gun -

Meet Tina Marie Arie and Howard Windham.

The Texas duo was arrested on drug charges last Monday after a cop was summoned to a Whataburger, where a male acquaintance of Arie and Windham was passed out.

Arie, 44, who admitted providing the unconscious man with Hydrocodone, was arrested for delivery of a controlled substance. Windham, 30, was collared on a possession rap after he was found with the painkiller Soma. The pair was cuffed and stuffed into a police cruiser for the trip to get booked.

That’s when things got interesting, according to a spokesperson for Montgomery County Constable Precinct 4. When the officer looked in his rear view mirror, he “could no longer see Tina Arie,” who subsequently explained that she was resting her head in Windham’s lap because she was “tired.”

The Smoking Gun -

When Shanaya Edgell arrived early yesterday morning at a McDonald’s in Janesville, Wisconsin, she was expecting to order from the fast food joint’s regular menu--Big Macs, french fries, Chicken McNuggets, and the like.

Except it was around 3 AM and the restaurant had already switched over to its breakfast menu--hash browns, Egg McMuffins, hotcakes, and the like.

This enraged Edgell, according to Janesville Police Department officers, since she wanted a cheeseburger.

Jury mulls capital murder verdict in stabbing
Defendant is accused of helping lure robbery victim, killing him.
By Jessica Kwong - Express-News

James Garza was 17, “a scared young man” under the control of a friend, when he helped lure an acquaintance to a parking lot to steal his car, his lawyer said Monday.

But the acquaintance, Mario Raygoza, 19, was stabbed to death and Garza faces an automatic sentence of life in prison without parole if the jury in his capital murder trial finds him guilty. The panel was unable to reach a verdict after deliberating more than five hours and will resume today.

There was “absolutely no question” Garza, now 19, was guilty of aggravated robbery, defense attorney Wayne Huff told jurors in closing arguments. Garza and Stephen Vogt, 19, “were going to use knives to scare (the victim) for his car” and take off to Colorado to get away from their disapproving parents.

What we have here is a good start

You know what's wrong?

They needed to arrest more of them.

Police arrest 70 Wall Street protesters
COLLEEN LONG, Associated Press, VERENA DOBNIK, Associated Press

NEW YORK (AP) — Police arrested 70 protesters at New York's Zuccotti Park early Tuesday, including some who chained themselves together, while clearing the park so that sanitation crews could clean it.

Concerns about health and safety issues at Occupy Wall Street camps around the country have intensified, and protesters have been ordered to take down their shelters, adhere to curfews and relocate so that parks can be cleaned.

At about 1 a.m. Tuesday, New York City police handed out notices from Brookfield Office Properties, owner of Zuccotti Park, and the city saying that the park had to be cleared because it had become unsanitary and hazardous. Protesters were told they could return in several hours, but without sleeping bags, tarps or tents.

Robber tried to get 'Call of Duty'
UPI.com

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (UPI) -- Police in Missouri said a man who was frustrated by long lines to buy "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3" tried to take it from another man at gunpoint.

Investigators said David Morales, 18, of North Kansas City visited the Kansas City GameStop store just after midnight Tuesday for the popular game's release and was frustrated when he saw the long line, The Kansas City (Mo.) Star reported Wednesday.

Police said Morales decided to steal a copy, so he followed customer Adam Freeman to his apartment, parked his red Ford Explorer behind Freeman's vehicle and pointed a gun at the man, demanding he hand over the game.

Man:  Sleep aid made me drink, drive and hit cars
By Jon Seidel - Chicago Sun-Times

A Shorewood man wants a Will County judge to clear him of a drunken driving charge because he said he became “involuntarily intoxicated” after taking a prescription dose of the sleep aid Ambien last year.

Thomas A. Gatz, 43, was found wearing only his underwear July 27, 2010, after he drove his car eastbound in the westbound lanes of West Jefferson Street in Joliet and caused a crash that shattered an 18-year-old woman’s arm, court records said.

His attorney is pointing to a doctor’s expert testimony that Ambien can cause sleep-walking, eating and driving.
