This case was, of course, big news in San Antonio. her husband had been found guilty earlier and his case is now under appeal.
I'd met him, never met her, but had met her sister who is also an attorney.
This is just a mess, really. Or as my daughters would say, its messed up.
She's got very good defense counsel, as he did, but trying this case now, just before Christmas I predict will result in acquittals for her. She may want to be thankful that the judge, turned down her request and Motion for a Change of Venue which would have most likely delayed the trial past the holidays.
Part 2 of legal lovers' trial begins
Guillermo Contreras: Express-News
Lawyer Mary S. Roberts was an ignored, emotionally abused spouse whose marriage was on the rocks when she reached into cyberspace for love and lust with other men.
Or, she was a conniving woman who cheated on her husband, also an attorney, then helped him shake down her lovers for thousands of dollars.
Those are the portrayals of the woman whose sexual indiscretions over several months in 2001 began a controversial case that has many questioning whether the two attorneys manipulated the law.
Roberts went on trial Tuesday on five counts of theft by coercion or deception, and she could face up to 20 years in prison should she be convicted.
Jurors must decide whether Roberts helped her husband, Ted H. Roberts, extract $155,000 from four of her paramours, Geoffrey Ferguson, Reagan Saka, Paul Fitzgerald and Steve Reibel. Though the men were led to believe that the money would go to charity, prosecutors contend that the Robertses used it to buy a new house and cover personal and business expenses.
