Athens police arrest man with 120 stolen beers

An Athens-Clarke police officer recovered more than $100 worth of stolen Budweiser beer Thursday night when he stopped to check on a man he saw staggering dangerously close to traffic as he pushed a shopping cart along busy West Broad Street.

The man’s cart was loaded with four boxes that contained 30 beers each, which he told the officer he had purchased from a bootlegger, according to a police report.

But the beer was stolen from the nearby Kroger on Alps Road, police said.

Lawn Mower driver charged with DUI

CITRA – James David Gray said he has "a bad drinking problem."

The 68-year-old Citra man - who was arrested Tuesday and charged with driving a lawn mower while intoxicated - said he has been drinking since he was 16, can't control his habit and needs help.

"I need to get into a long rehab program," Gray said during an interview at the Marion County Jail, where he was being held without bond Wednesday afternoon.

1873 dime sells for a pretty penny: $1.6 Million

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — A dime made in 1873 has cost someone a pretty penny: It sold for $1.6 million at auction.

An anonymous bidder won the pristine coin, said Chris Napolitano, president of Stack's Bowers Galleries, which auctioned it during an American Numismatic Association convention. With a 15 percent buyer's fee tacked on, the final price for the coin was $1.84 million, he said.

The rare coin was minted in Carson City, Nev., during a one-day run of dimes.

Incumbent jabbed over dog deaths

Add dead dogs to the list of negative talking points Susan Pamerleau is using in her GOP campaign to unseat Sheriff Amadeo Ortiz.

The retired Air Force major general's litany of criticisms, her mantra since launching her campaign in February, already includes jail woes, security lapses, misbehaving deputies and a strained relationship with Commissioners Court, which controls his purse strings.

But there's something about heat-suffocated dogs in a sheriff's K-9 Unit vehicle that makes the incident irresistible political fodder in the campaign's remaining 12 weeks.

Woman watching TV shot during drive-by

A 38-year-old woman who was watching TV inside her house was shot in the chest during a drive-by shooting Friday night, police said.

Capt. Tracy Powers said an unknown gunman in a dark colored SUV drove down Hammond Street around 11:30 p.m. and fired more than 10 rounds, striking car and houses.

The woman was taken to University Hospital and her injuries were not expected to be life threatening, Powers said.

NORFOLK, Va. (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney has picked Wisconsin congressman Paul Ryan to be his running mate, according to a Republican with knowledge of the development. They will appear together Saturday in Norfolk, Va., at the start of a four-state bus tour to introduce the newly minted GOP ticket to the nation.

The official spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because this person was not authorized to disclose the decision.

In a statement issued Friday night, Romney's campaign would say only that the running mate would be revealed at 9 a.m. EDT at the Nauticus Museum. Berthed at the museum is the USS Wisconsin — which offered a hint about Romney's choice.

Effort nets 222 arrests of fugitives

NEW BRAUNFELS — A joint operation by the Texas Attorney General’s Fugitive Unit, the U.S. Marshals Service’s Lone Star Fugitive Task Force and other state, federal and local law enforcement agencies successfully resulted in the arrests of 222 fugitives.

Officers with the Attorney General’s Fugitive Unit arrested seven fugitives wanted on charges ranging from sexual abuse of a child to burglary. Dubbed Operation Heat Wave, the crackdown targeted fugitives with outstanding state and federal arrest warrants.

Among those arrested in the roundup was 71-year-old Refugio Ortega of New Braunfels. Officers with the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force arrested Ortega at his residence on West Plum Street on Wednesday and booked him on one count of continuous sexual abuse of a child under 14 years old.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome sucks!

Dear Readers;

Between as the young kids say, a wicked bad case of carpal tunnel syndrome, a two day drug court retreat and a whole bunch of work to try to catch up on it has been a little rough on the Man o' Law blog.

I apologize for that Dear Readers and as long as my hand can take it I will keep on keeping on.

I do have a nerve test next week to see what is going on.

DC man orders TV, gets assault rifle instead

WASHINGTON (AP) — A Washington musician who ordered a flat-screen TV from Amazon.com was shocked to receive a semiautomatic assault rifle instead.

Thirty-eight-year-old Seth Horvitz says he purchased the 39-inch television from a third-party seller. A box arrived from UPS on Tuesday evening, and it seemed too small to contain the TV. He says he initially thought it contained accessories.

But when he opened it, he found a Sig Sauer military-style rifle. He says he had never held a gun before he felt the trigger of the rifle.

Jewelry salesman ambushed, stabbed

A jewelry salesman visiting San Antonio from out of state is in critical condition after two men stabbed him Wednesday afternoon in the Lincoln Heights shopping center.

Police Sgt. Daniel Alonzo said the victim was a jewelry wholesaler, possibly from New York.

He said the man had visited C. Aaron Penaloza Jewelers in the shopping center, then had lunch at La Posada del Rey about 1 p.m.

McGonigal trial set for December

SEGUIN — The perjury trial for a New Braunfels businessman was pushed back Wednesday morning when he appeared before a Guadalupe County judge in Seguin.

Leonidas Patrick (Mark) McGonigal’s aggravated perjury trial will happen, though, his attorney, Robert J. Barrera of San Antonio, said Wednesday.

“There will be a trial if the DA says so,” Barrera said as he and his client descended the third-floor stairs outside of 25th District Judge Dwight Peschel’s court.

Kendall deputies recover stolen eagle statue

BOERNE — Kendall County deputies have recovered an antique cast iron eagle statue that was stolen in May from outside the Waring Volunteer Fire Department, which adopted the Case farm equipment figure as its mascot in 1978.

A tip led authorities Saturday to the 250-pound eagle that had been disassembled and hidden beneath brush in a field in a nearby county, Kendall County Sheriff's Lt. Shad Prichard said Tuesday.

He said no arrests have been made, but a suspect has been identified in the May 26 theft of one of the two such birds that stood on rock pedestals outside the fire department, which owned them.

Man arrested after police said he filmed women changing clothes

A 17-year-old working as a janitor at Kohl's was arrested this week on three charges of improper photography after police said he used his iPhone to record women changing in the dressing room.

According to an arrest warrant affidavit, a woman who was in the changing room noticed someone was holding an iPhone underneath the privacy wall and recording her. She immediately told store management and they called police.

Police questioned Jose Ignacio Montiel and found an iPhone “hidden in the crotch area of his pants.” He declined to let them search the phone, so a warrant was obtained and police discovered several videos of women changing. He then admitted to taking photos of women in the dressing room, according to the affidavit

Killer of Texas police snitch set to die Tuesday

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — Convicted killer Marvin Wilson is looking to the U.S. Supreme Court to keep him from the Texas death chamber.

Attorneys for the 54-year-old Wilson say he's mentally impaired and should be spared from lethal injection in Huntsville Tuesday evening. The high court has barred execution of mentally impaired people.

State lawyers contend the single test that indicated mental impairment was faulty and the results are different in all other psychological testing of the Jefferson County man.
