City expands DWI unit
By Peter J. Holley and Leezia Dhalla - Express-News The black Nissan sedan drifted from one edge of its lane to the other like an unsteady crayon unable to stay within the lines of a coloring book.
Subtle enough to pass unnoticed just hours earlier, the sluggish swerves were more conspicuous at 1 a.m. on a Thursday morning, prime time for the San Antonio Police Department's DWI unit.
Within minutes of being spotted near Babcock Road, the driver was leaning against his car — head bowed, hands dug into pockets — as Officer Domingo Flores, 37, questioned him about the open six-pack he'd found on the Nissan's passenger seat.
“We try to get them off the road before 2 a.m.” said Flores, who has been with the DWI unit for a year. “After 2 a.m. you never know what's going to happen out there.”
