Police: 2 iPads recovered; student charged

New Braunfels Police Department officers on Friday detained a 15-year-old student and charged him with stealing an iPad from New Braunfels ISD’s Ninth Grade Center, an NBPD spokesman said Monday.

Capt. John McDonald said the student attends the school and is charged with stealing one of the devices issued to him earlier this year. The boy also might have had help in stealing an iPad issued to another student, McDonald said.

“There may be other arrests that come out of this as the investigation continues,” he said.

Former ADA sentenced in family violence case

SEGUIN — A former assistant district attorney has been sentenced in a case of misdemeanor assault.
Lew A. Bechtol II was first assistant district attorney on the staff of District Attorney Heather McMinn until shortly after his arrest April 12, 2012 on a charge of assaulting his fiance at a home they shared.

Bechtol, 49, pleaded nolo contendere (no contest) to assault causing bodily injury/family violence in court Monday morning, and Guadalupe County Court-at-Law Judge Frank Follis ordered him to serve 18 months probation with deferred adjudication.

Terms of the plea agreement also called for Bechtol to pay a $500 fine, court costs of $212 and to relinquish his license to practice law for three months. He also will be required to attend weekly classes in a 26-week program for family violence offenders.

Why the Arms race at the Dept. of Homeland Security, Janet?

Worried about the people of the United States?

Obama DHS Purchases 2,700 Light-Armored Tanks to Go With Their 1.6 Billion Bullet Stockpile

Posted by Jim Hoft - The Gateway Pundit

The Department of Homeland Security (through the U.S. Army Forces Command) recently retrofitted 2,717 of these ‘Mine Resistant Protected’ vehicles for service on the streets of the United States.

Although I’ve seen and read several online blurbs about this vehicle of late, I decided to dig slightly deeper and discover more about the vehicle itself.

The new DHS sanctioned ‘Street Sweeper’ (my own slang due to the gun ports) is built by Navistar Defense (NavistarDefense.com), a division within the Navistar organization. Under the Navistar umbrella are several other companies including International Trucks, IC Bus (they make school buses), Monaco RV (recreational vehicles), WorkHorse (they make chassis), MaxxForce (diesel engines), and Navistar Financial (the money arm of the company).

Another drunk driver?

Odds are he was drunk.

Driving the wrong-way down the highway at 2:45 a.m. in San Antonio?

Yup.  Most likely.

Wrong-way driver killed in crash
By Eva Ruth Moravec - Staff Writer - Express-News

A wrong-way driver was killed in a crash early Sunday in West Bexar County, officials said.

Around 2:45 a.m., a man was reportedly driving west in the eastbound lanes of U.S. 90 near Montgomery Road. The driver then crashed head-on into an eastbound Nissan Titan, said a Bexar County Sheriff's Office spokesman.

The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead at the scene, said spokesman Paul Berry, and the driver of the pickup that he hit was flown to University Hospital with serious injuries. His condition was not immediately available Sunday.

Cyclist injured, driver detained in crash
By Eva Ruth Moravec - Staff Writer - Express-News

San Antonio police detained a man who may have been intoxicated when he crashed into a 30-year-old cyclist just south of downtown Sunday evening.

Just before 7 p.m., a 52-year-old man driving a pickup was headed south on South Alamo Street when he attempted to turn left on South Presa, police said. He had a green light, but reportedly failed to yield while turning to two cyclists, who were riding north on South Alamo Street.

The front of the pickup struck one of the riders, who wasn't wearing a helmet, said police Sgt. Jim Prendergast. Police detained the motorist, who refused to give a breathalyzer test.

Associated Press

The Homeland Security Department released from its jails more than 2,000 illegal immigrants facing deportation in recent weeks due to looming budget cuts and planned to release 3,000 more during March, The Associated Press has learned.

The newly disclosed figures, cited in internal budget documents reviewed by the AP, are significantly higher than the "few hundred" illegal immigrants the Obama administration acknowledged this week had been released under the budget-savings process.

The government documents show that Immigrations and Customs Enforcement released roughly 1,000 illegal immigrants from its jails around the U.S. each week since at least Feb. 15. The agency's field offices have reported more than 2,000 immigrants released before intense criticism this week led to a temporary shutdown of the plan, according to the documents.

Horsemeat scandal: Four new products test positive

BBC -

Four beef products sold by Bird's Eye, Taco Bell and catering supplier Brakes have been found to contain horse DNA, the Food Standards Agency says.

This is the third wave of test results received by the FSA, which has now received a total of 5,430 test results.

Meanwhile, new tests conducted on beef retail products revealed no new cases of horsemeat adulteration, the British Retail Consortium (BRC) has said.

This latest round of tests saw 1,797 products being examined.

The Holocaust just got more shocking
NY Times -

THIRTEEN years ago, researchers at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum began the grim task of documenting all the ghettos, slave labor sites, concentration camps and killing factories that the Nazis set up throughout Europe.

What they have found so far has shocked even scholars steeped in the history of the Holocaust.

The researchers have cataloged some 42,500 Nazi ghettos and camps throughout Europe, spanning German-controlled areas from France to Russia and Germany itself, during Hitler’s reign of brutality from 1933 to 1945.

The figure is so staggering that even fellow Holocaust scholars had to make sure they had heard it correctly when the lead researchers previewed their findings at an academic forum in late January at the German Historical Institute in Washington.

“The numbers are so much higher than what we originally thought,” Hartmut Berghoff, director of the institute, said in an interview after learning of the new data.

“We knew before how horrible life in the camps and ghettos was,” he said, “but the numbers are unbelievable.”

The documented camps include not only “killing centers” but also thousands of forced labor camps, where prisoners manufactured war supplies; prisoner-of-war camps; sites euphemistically named “care” centers, where pregnant women were forced to have abortions or their babies were killed after birth; and brothels, where women were coerced into having sex with German military personnel.

Opinions mixed as State takeover looms in Detroit
CBSDetroit -

DETROIT (WWJ) - Is the governor caving to pressure from the suburbs?  Detroit City President Charles Pugh said that’s a fact, as Rick Snyder on Friday declared a financial emergency in Detroit, setting the stage for a state takeover.

Pugh said, however, while there is pressure from outside the city, he’s certain there are people within Detroit who would welcome a state-appointed emergency financial manager.

“Because they’re tired of it lingering. They want to get it over with,” Pugh told WWJ Newsradio 950′s Pat Sweeting.

Why?  Because of a perceived 'loss of power'?

Castro opposes county-city consolidation
By Eva Ruth Moravec - Express-News

AUSTIN — San Antonio Mayor Julián Castro opposes a proposal to consolidate governance with Bexar County, and believes the move would negatively affect the city's credit rating, response times for emergency services, and increase spending, according to a letter from Castro dated Thursday.

“While the City of San Antonio supports policies which enhance the efficiency of City and County government, eliminate duplication of services, reduce costs and improve customer service, (Larson's legislation) does not accomplish these goals,” Castro wrote in the note submitted to the House Committee on County Affairs.

The consolidation was proposed in two bills filed by State Rep. Lyle Larson.

Kennedy retrial set for April 1
By Dalondo Moultrie New Braunfels Herald-Zeitung

A Comal County man convicted several years ago of having a shootout with a police officer will finally have his day in court, again.

Steve Thomas, Comal County court administrator, said he set a date of April 1 for a retrial in Michael Patrick Kennedy’s assault case. Judge Jack Robison of the 207th judicial district will hear the case, Thomas said.

In 2006, Kennedy, 56, of Bulverde, pleaded guilty to a March 3, 2005 shooting in which he allegedly fired 30 to 50 rounds at Schertz police officer Richard Kunz during a traffic stop on Interstate 35. Kunz returned fire and shot Kennedy three times.
