Crash in stolen truck leaves man dead
Express-News

A 30-year-old San Antonio man died over the weekend when the stolen pickup he was driving caught fire after it veered off Texas 16 in Atascosa County and ran into a group of trees, officials said.

Jose Daniel Rangel was northbound when he overcorrected, crossing into the center median, said Department of Public Safety communication operator Wes Hutson.

Reading from a traffic accident report, Hutson said Rangel hit the trees 5 miles north of Poteet about 4:06 p.m. Saturday.

The pickup, reported stolen by San Antonio police before the accident, then caught fire as Rangel was trapped inside, Hutson said.

Passing motorists tried to free Rangel, but as the vehicle became engulfed in flames, they were forced to ‘retreat for safety,' he said.

Rangel was pronounced dead at the scene, Hutson said.
