Few frills accompany first day of new court
As state District Judge Lisa Jarrett sat inside her new office Monday afternoon at Bexar County's juvenile detention center, one hardly would have guessed it was a judge's chambers.
There were no shelves filled with law books, no gavels or other mementos of her 16-year law career. Instead, only a small second-hand desk and a few chairs sat between four barren walls. Next door, her 436th state District Court, still smelling of new paint and carpeting, wasn't much better.
But it's a start, Jarrett said with a smile as she prepared for her first docket in the juvenile courtroom.
