Vast international child-porn network uncovered
By Denise Lavoie - AP legal Affairs Writer

BOSTON — The men came from different walks of life on two continents: a children's puppeteer in Florida, a hotel manager in Massachusetts, an emergency medical technician in Kansas, a day care worker in the Netherlands. In all, 43 men have been arrested over the past two years in a horrific, far-flung child porn network that unraveled like a sweater with a single loose thread.

In this case, the thread was a stuffed toy bunny.

The bunny, seen in a photo of a half-naked, distraught 18-month-old boy, was used to painstakingly trace a molester to Amsterdam. From there, investigators made one arrest after another of men accused of sexually abusing children, exchanging explicit photos of the attacks and even chatting online about abducting, cooking and eating youngsters.

Would an influx of homeless people trigger an increase in crime? What would happen to their quality of life when hundreds of strangers came to Haven for Hope?

Haven and city officials assured them steps would be taken to guard against any negative impact.

Ex-con convicted of fake-cop scheme to scam prostitutes
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News

Sure, Raul Garza III solicited services from a South Side prostitute, then refused to pay her and intimidated her to get her out of his car, he acknowledged to a jury Friday.

But his intimidation tactic never included pretending to be a cop, he insisted during several hours of often bizarre and explicit testimony.

It took jurors about 40 minutes to reject the ex-con's explanation, finding him guilty of impersonation of a public servant.

Back on the trail, Obama clings to the teleprompter
By Charlie Spiering - Washington Examiner

President Obama spoke to supporters in Florida this afternoon, but was careful to stick to his script, relying heavily on his teleprompters.

The president campaigned without teleprompters last month, when he made his  controversial "you didn't build that" remark about business owners.

A campaign aide insisted last week that Obama's slip up wouldn't change the campaign's teleprompter strategy.

Homeless man found with weapons cache, list of names in SF Golden  State Park
CBS San Francisco -

SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— San Francisco Police displayed an array of high power weapons and ammunition Wednesday that were found in a homeless man’s car last month in Golden Gate Park.

Officers had prior contact with the man, but Chief of Police Greg Suhr ended up defending his department even though the suspect got past them with a large amount of weapons.

When police found a huge cache of guns, knives, a shotgun, 5,800 rounds of ammunition and camouflage gear in Robert Johns’ car on July 21st it was thought they may have diverted some kind of planned attack.

Also in that vehicle was a list of names of political leaders, reportedly including President Barack Obama.

Sometimes the law is an ass

This is just plain wrong on so many levels.
Dayna Donovan and her family have been unable to occupy their home after two strangers squatting in her Littleton, Colo., home for eight months have filed for bankruptcy, preventing an eviction from the sheriff's department.

On July 12, a judge in Arapahoe County ruled that Veronica Fernandez-Beleta and Jose Rafael Leyva-Caraveo, the two people who were living in the home, had to move out in 48 hours.

Troy Donovan, 45, filed for a forced eviction with the Arapahoe County Sheriff's office on July 16.
However, Fernandez-Beleta filed for bankruptcy on July 20, which the Donovans learned about just hours before the scheduled eviction was to take place last week.

"The sheriff's office will not proceed with an eviction if there is a bankruptcy in question," Arapahoe County Undersheriff David Walcher told a local CBS television station.

Prosecutors: Ex-con was fake cop to prey on prostitutes
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News

An ex-con accused of preying on San Antonio prostitutes — pretending to be an undercover sheriff's deputy and demanding free services — will face a minimum 25-year sentence if a jury convicts him of impersonating an officer.

The trial of Raul Garza III, 42, began Wednesday. He was arrested in June 2011 after a woman working the streets in a South Side area known for prostitution told authorities she had been raped by an officer. She wouldn't usually call police but was disturbed by statements the man made about her 10-year-old daughter, she said.

“He asked her if he could photograph her daughter in her panties,” San Antonio Police Officer Elizabeth Padron testified Wednesday, explaining that the prostitute said the defendant also instructed her to perform a sex act on him “like a 10-year-old would.”

Area crashes claim five lives
By Express-News staff

In a little more than 24 hours following Monday's triple-fatal accident on Interstate 35, five more people died in three crashes in and around San Antonio.

The first came Monday morning when two drivers were killed and a third was badly injured in a McMullen County accident that involved heavy trucks apparently related to the Eagle Ford Shale play.

The wreck occurred shortly after 10 a.m. on Texas 72 about 10 miles east of Tilden, when a tractor-trailer rig driven by Ramiro Cavasos of Edinburg veered across the centerline and hit two oncoming rigs, the Department of Public Safety said.
