Man attempts to surf on truck, fractures skull
By Eva Ruth Moravec - Express-News

A 20-year-old man sustained a skull fracture early Sunday when he was attempting to “surf” on the roof of a pickup at an apartment complex near the University of Texas at San Antonio.

Solomon Hilbun is in stable condition at University Hospital, where he was taken after he fell off the roof and landed on his head at the Highlands Apartments in the 5600 block of UTSA Boulevard around 2:30 a.m., according to police.

A San Antonio Police Department incident report states Hilbun was on top of the truck when the driver, a 20-year-old man, slammed on his brakes. Hilbun “was unable to maintain his balance” and was thrown to the pavement, the report states.

Not the best thing to be happening at this time

Having once visited Egypt for several weeks while I was a geologist I wouldn't be surprised if some of the police didn't join in the rioting as well.

I went to Cairo back in 1986, 3 days after the police had rioted, and the city was in 'lock-down' and patrolled by the army.

Having Muslim riots doesn't play well right now I'm afraid.

Egypt Muslims burn Christian shops: police
Breitbart.com-

Hundreds of Muslim protesters on Saturday burnt Christian-owned shops in southern Egypt and attacked a police station where they believed a Christian accused of raping a Muslim girl was being held, a police official said.

Police repelled the demonstrators in the town of Farshut using tear gas and also arrested 60 people during the clashes in which seven Coptic Christian-owned shops were destroyed, the official said.

The protesters hurled stones at the police station after they heard that a Coptic Christian man accused of kidnapping and sexually assaulting a 12-year-old Muslim was being held there, he said.

Roughly ten percent of Egypt's 80-million-strong population are Coptic Christians, who complain of discrimination and are sometimes the target of sectarian attacks.

Cops say prostitute stabbed customer
By Peter J. Holley - Express-News

A San Antonio man who police said picked up a prostitute and then refused to pay her for sex was reportedly stabbed several times by the woman.

Police said the 54-year-old man, who was not immediately identified, was taken to University Hospital where he was listed Friday morning in stable condition.

The 2:30 a.m. stabbing, at the intersection of Santiago and South Hamilton, occurred after the man refused to pay upfront, police said. A fight ensued, and the woman allegedly stabbed him three times in the chest before fleeing. Police did not immediately apprehend the woman.

How many children does she have at age 17?

Look for a self-defense issue I am sure.

Girl, 17, facing murder charge

Police have arrested a teenager authorities say fatally stabbed the father of one of her children Friday evening on the city's East Side.

Tiffany James, 17, was charged with murder and was being held in Bexar County Jail under $100,000 bail.

The victim, who has not been identified, was found dead of an apparent stab wound to the chest at an apartment in the 4600 block of Dietrich Road.

Nurse is cleared in Wilford Hall deaths
By Scott Huddleston - Express-News

In a swift verdict Saturday, a military judge acquitted Capt. Michael Fontana, an Air Force nurse being tried on charges of murdering three patients.

“Capt. Fontana, this court finds you, of all charges and specifications, not guilty,” Col. William Burd announced soon after closing arguments in a five-day court-martial at Lackland AFB.

The verdict ended a nearly 16-month ordeal for Fontana, 36, who works at Wilford Hall Medical Center, the Air Force's largest hospital.

Warmed-over love

This is a new take on the whole climate-change will destroy man-kind meme.

It puts a whole meaning to 'cap and trade' doesn't it?

And the jury is still out on the whole global warming bit anyway.

Jeeze!

‘Climate change pushes poor women to prostitution, dangerous work’
JOSEPH HOLANDES UBALDE, GMANews.TV

The effects of climate change have driven women in communities in coastal areas in poor countries like the Philippines into dangerous work, and sometimes even the flesh trade, a United Nations official said.

Suneeta Mukherjee, country representative of the United Nations Food Population Fund (UNFPA), said women in the Philippines are the most vulnerable to the effects of climate change in the country.

“Climate change could reduce income from farming and fishing, possibly driving some women into sex work and thereby increase HIV infection," Mukherjee said during the Wednesday launch of the UNFPA annual State of World Population Report in Pasay City.

In the Philippines, small brothels usually pop up near the coastal areas where many women perform sexual services for transient seafarers. Often, these prostitutes are ferried to bigger ships by their pimps.

Based on the UNFPA report, there are 92 million Filipinos in the country as of 2009 and that number is expected to balloon to more than 146 million in the next 40 years.

Of the 92 million Filipinos, about 60 percent are living in coastal areas and depend on the seas for livelihood, said former Environment secretary Dr. Angel Alcala.

Alcala said that “we have already exceeded the carrying capacity of our marine environment."

But as the sea’s resources are depleted due to overpopulation and overfishing, fishermen start losing their livelihood and women are forced to share the traditional role of the man in providing for the family.

Alacala, who also heads the Angelo King Center for Research and Environmental Management in Siliman University, said some women often pick out shellfish by the coastlines, which exposed to storm surges.

Women who can no longer endure this work often go out to find other jobs, while some are tempted to go into prostitution, Alcala added.

In an interview with the Inter Press News Agency, Marita Rodriguez of the Centre for Empowerment and Resource Development, Inc. said women are taking the brunt of climate change.

"Aside from their household chores and participation in fishing activity, they have to find additional sources of income like working as domestic helpers in affluent families," she said.

The UNFPA noted that the temperature in the earth’s surface has risen 0.74 degrees Celsius in the past 100 years. The 10 warmest years globally since 1880 have also been recorded in the last 13 years.

“Slower population growth, for example, would help build social resilience to climate change’s impacts and would contribute to a reduction of greenhouse gas-emissions in the future," the UNFPA report said.

The UNFPA suggested five measures to mitigate climate change and overpopulation:
  • Bring a better understanding of population dynamics, gender and reproductive health to climate change and environmental discussions at all levels;

  • Fully fund family planning services and contraceptive supplies within the framework of reproductive health and rights, and assure that low income is no barrier to access;

  • Prioritize research and date collection to improve the understanding of gender and population dynamics in climate change mitigation and adaptation;

  • Improve sex-disaggregation of date related to migration flows that are influenced by environmental factors and prepare now for increases in population movements resulting from climate change; and

  • Integrate gender considerations into global efforts to mitigate and adapt to climate change.

Wow I better not go to Peru anytime soon.

They could make a few years supply of wrinkle-free cosmetics out of me.

What? I'm just sayin'

Gang 'killed victims to extract their fat'
Peruvian police arrest suspects who allegedly drained their victims and sold liquid as an anti-wrinkle treatment

Guardian.co.uk

A Peruvian gang that allegedly killed people and drained fat from their corpses for use in cosmetics may have been inspired by a grisly Andean legend.

Hilarió Cudeña Simon, the alleged ringleader, linked the crimes to tales of demonic assassins, known as Pishtacos, who purportedly waylaid victims in pre-Columbian times, police said.

Peru reacted with revulsion and horror to reports that scores of peasants may have been butchered by the gang, which was said to have operated in Huánuco, a rural province dotted with Inca temples between the jungle and Andean peaks.

Colonel Jorge Mejia, chief of Peru's anti-kidnapping police, said Cudeña and three other suspects were in custody and that another seven gang members were being hunted.

The jailed men have confessed to killing five people, but police suspect the number of victims is far higher, with 60 people reported missing in Huánuco this year alone. Two of the suspects were arrested at a bus station in the capital, Lima, carrying bottles of liquid fat which they claimed were worth up to £36,000 a gallon.

At a news conference police displayed two bottles of fat, which laboratory tests confirmed were human. "The fat was extracted from the thorax and thighs," said Eusebio Felix Murga, chief of police of Dirincri district. Police also showed a photo of the rotting head of a 27-year-old male victim discovered last month in a coca-growing valley.

Police said they received a tip four months ago about a trade in human fat, which exported the amber liquid to Europe as anti-wrinkle cream. In addition to the alleged ringleader the suspects were named as Segundo Castillejos Agüero, Marcos Veramendi Princípe and Enadina Estela Claudio. They have been charged with homicide, criminal conspiracy, illegal firearms possession and drug trafficking.

The alleged plot has evoked comparisons to Patrick Süskind's novel Perfume in which a killer distills the essence of his victims into a jar. Others compare it to the film Fight Club in which a character played by Brad Pitt steals bags of human fat from a liposuction clinic to make soap.

The gang have been nicknamed the Pishtacos after the ruthless assassins of indigenous Quechua legend who ambushed solitary victims and drained their fat as an offering to gods to make the land fertile. Another version depicts them as cannibal bandits who ate the skin and sold the fat. The stories date back to before the European conquest.

The suspects allegedly would sever victims' heads, arms and legs, remove organs and suspend torsos from hooks above candles, which warmed the flesh as the fat dripped into tubs below. Members claimed other gangs were engaged in similar killings.

Medical experts said human fat had cosmetic applications to keep skin supple, but were sceptical about an international black market. "It doesn't make any sense, because in most countries we can get fat so readily and in such amounts from people who are willing to donate," Adam Katz, a professor of plastic surgery at the University of Virginia medical school, told the Associated Press.

Peruvians expressed shock that grisly Andean legends they heard from their grandparents could turn out to have a modern twist. "It's really incredible that killers like this could exist today," said one contributor to the newspaper Peru21.

Nobody I know grew up hoping that one day they will be found dead stabbed outside of a bar after a fight.

By Brian Chasnoff - Express-News

A San Antonio police officer who killed a motorist while responding to a call three years ago was charged with driving while intoxicated Friday after wrecking an undercover police car, internal police documents obtained by the San Antonio Express-News show.

Officer Winder Amedalio Morales, 33, who reportedly was banned from driving patrol cars following his involvement in a 2006 collision that killed a 25-year-old man, told arresting officers Friday he was returning the city vehicle to a police substation after finishing working an undercover drug buy when he crashed.

But police spokesman Sgt. Chris Benavides said Morales was off-duty when he flipped the vehicle, an assertion echoed by Assistant City Manager Erik Walsh.

Former music teacher sentenced for child porn

A former music teacher who at one time had what the FBI said was the largest collection of child pornography in San Antonio was sentenced Thursday to eight years and four months in prison.

Dennis Jasso, 34, taught at Sam Houston High School from August 2006 through May 2007 and was an assistant band director. He also was a church choir leader and gave private music lessons to students at other school districts.

His lawyers, Roy Barrera Sr. and Bobby Barrera, argued that Jasso had an addiction to child porn, but looked at it in private, did not have any inappropriate contact with children and was actively participating in his own rehabilitation.

Hotel guests warned of scam

-

Law enforcement officials are warning hotel guests to be leery of callers seeking credit card information after attempted scams on Thursday.

Police said an unknown person was contacting guests at a local hotel seeking their credit card information, according to the New Braunfels Police Department.

The caller allegedly was phoning guests to say there was a problem with their credit card number during registration, and they needed it again.

Police said the scam worked on a few guests, and are advising guests not to give their credit card information over the phone.

NBPD officers are looking for potential suspects. Hotel guests are asked to contact police if a caller solicits credit card information over the phone. The case is under investigation.

Its a gratuity people

Wow, the police don't have anything better to do?

I mean this seems to be pretty stupid.

The worst that should have happened, IMHO, is they should have received a tcket/summons to appear in Court. Not arrested and hauled down to the pokey.

My guess is the Lehigh Pub will be losing customers over this for sure.

Couple Busted for Refusing to Pay Tip

Patrons claim service was so bad, they had to get napkins and silverware for themselves
By DAVID CHANG

If you’re frustrated by poor service at a restaurant, think twice before you decide to not tip. You may be in for a bit more than just a dirty look from the waiter.

"Nobody, nobody wants to be forced to pay a tip or be arrested for terrible service," Leslie Pope said when her happy hour ended in handcuffs.

Pope and John Wagner were hauled away by police and charged with theft for not paying the mandatory 18 percent gratuity totaling $16 after eating at the Lehigh Pub in Bethlehem, Pa. with six friends.

Pope claimed that they had to wait nearly an hour for their order and that she had to get napkins and silverware for the table herself.

“At this point I became very annoyed because I had already gone up to the bar myself to have my soda refilled because the waitress never came back,” Pope said.

After the $73 bill came, the group paid for food, drinks, and tax but refused to pay the tip. After explaining the bad service to the bartender in charge, Pope claimed he took their money and called police. The couple was handcuffed and placed in the back of a police car.

“I understand that, you know, we didn’t pay the gratuity, but it was a gratuity, it wasn’t something that was required,” said Wagner.

The owner admitted that the group waited unusually long for their food, but said the pub was extremely busy that night. He said managers offered to comp the food, a claim the couple denies ever happened.

“Obviously we would have liked for the patron and the establishment to have worked this out without getting the police involved,” said Deputy Police Commissioner Stuart Bedics.

Police charged them with theft since the gratuity was part of the actual bill. However, it is doubtful that the charges will hold up in front of a judge. The couple is scheduled to appear in court next month.

Mow or bust!

Really?

$1,000 fine a day!!!! if your grass grows too high?

Man, I'd be putting in gravel or astro turf.

Fines for too-tall grass could rise to $1,000 a day in Jupiter
The Palm Beach Post-

— An overgrown lawn could cost a homeowner $1,000 a day.

A plan to quadruple the penalty from the current maximum of $250 per day for a first violation is scheduled for consideration at Tuesday night's town council meeting.

A repeat violation by the same person would be boosted to $5,000 a day maximum from $500 per day.

If the code enforcement board finds that the violation is irreversible — the unapproved removal of an historic tree, for example — the violator would face a maximum fine of $15,000. The current maximum penalty is $5,000.

"That's outrageous," said Stefan Harzen, a member of the property owners association for the Woodland Estates neighborhood. Increasing the fines will not result in prettier neighborhoods, he said. "This is an easy way for the town to get more money," Harzen said.

Higher penalties are needed to deter flagrant violators, said Councilman Robert Friedman. A landlord who allows too many people to live in a house simply sees the current fine as a cost of doing business, he said.

"Code enforcement needs a larger hammer," Friedman said.

Last year Jupiter's seven-person Code Enforcement Division collected about $39,000 in fines, according to town records.

The increase is being considered because once a town exceeds 50,000 people, state law says it can adopt higher penalties, according to a Nov. 9 memo from Building Department Director Robert Lecky to Town Manager Andy Lukasik. The town's population as of April 1 was 50,275, according to the University of Florida Bureau of Economic and Business Research.

The town code regulates items such as when garbage cans can be placed outside, noise volume, parking of boats, heights of fences, the number of tenants and landscaping. Lawns cannot be higher than eight inches in developed residential areas.

"The higher maximum gives us more discretion in levying the penalty," said Code Enforcement Director Frank Melillo.

Great location for a meth lab.

Meth lab busted in Pleasanton
By Vianna Davila - Express-News

The Pleasanton Police Department busted a methamphetamine lab Wednesday afternoon around the corner from two schools.

About two weeks ago, the department got information that the lab was operating out of a home on Grant Street, said Police Chief Gary Soward. They issued a search warrant around 4 p.m. Wednesday and discovered a “full-blown” meth lab in the location and several grams of finished product, Soward said.

Officers arrested residents Ronnie Dale Hershman, 36, and Russell Wayne Trimble, 41, both of Pleasanton. Soward said no weapons were found in the home.
