Kidnapping case among indictments

A Canyon Lake man faces felony indictments for kidnapping and assault for crimes authorities said he committed earlier this year, according to court documents filed April 10.

Also, a mother and son are accused of teaming to steal thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from an elderly woman, the documents show.

Indictments for the three were unavailable earlier in the week after Comal County Criminal District Attorney Jennifer Tharp released a list of those grand jurors indicted April 10.

On that day, the panel handed up indictments accusing Zachary Alexander Woods, 18, of Canyon Lake, of assaulting one man with a knife, another man with a “tire checker” and a third man with a metal pipe. The court documents show that the grand jury found enough evidence existed to charge Alexander with kidnapping a woman and the man he assaulted with the metal pipe.

Actor blames Boston attack on gun culture: ’2nd amendment must go’

Actor and comedian Jay Mohr waded into the gun debate on Twitter after Monday’s deadly terrorist attacks at the Boston Marathon. “What bothers me most about today is that we’re getting used 2 it.

Mohr, who hosts a podcast and Jay Mohr Sports on Fox Sports Radio, followed it up with another tweet connecting the Second Amendment to a “culture of violence.” Ads by Google Following push back on Twitter, Mohr elaborated on his contention further, explaining that he finds it sad that gun massacres are becoming increasingly common.

As we now move into the official Political Aftermath period of the Boston bombing — the period that will determine the long-term legislative fallout of the atrocity — the dynamics of privilege will undoubtedly influence the nation’s collective reaction to the attacks. That’s because privilege tends to determine: 1) which groups are — and are not — collectively denigrated or targeted for the unlawful actions of individuals; and 2) how big and politically game-changing the overall reaction ends up being.

This has been most obvious in the context of recent mass shootings. In those awful episodes, a religious or ethnic minority group lacking such privilege would likely be collectively slandered and/or targeted with surveillance or profiling (or worse) if some of its individuals comprised most of the mass shooters. However, white male privilege means white men are not collectively denigrated/targeted for those shootings — even though most come at the hands of white dudes.

Likewise, in the context of terrorist attacks, such privilege means white non-Islamic terrorists are typically portrayed not as representative of whole groups or ideologies, but as “lone wolf” threats to be dealt with as isolated law enforcement matters. Meanwhile, non-white or developing-world terrorism suspects are often reflexively portrayed as representative of larger conspiracies, ideologies and religions that must be dealt with as systemic threats — the kind potentially requiring everything from law enforcement action to military operations to civil liberties legislation to foreign policy shifts.

Pa. man's apparent suicide leaves 3 others dead

QUAKERTOWN, Pa. (AP) -- Friends and neighbors were stunned and saddened by the deaths of four family members who appear to have died of carbon monoxide fumes that resulted from the husband's apparent suicide.

Bucks County District Attorney David Heckler said Tuesday night that a state police investigation indicates that Gary Reitnauer went to the garage of an adjacent home on the family's property on Monday and started the car following a disagreement with his wife, Michelle.

He said it is believed that Michelle Reitnauer and the family's two daughters tried to rescue him and were overcome by the fumes. Fire department rescue crews were unable to revive the family.

South Side store owner slain

The owner of a South Side convenience store was fatally shot in an apparent robbery Monday morning.

An employee who came to work at Stanley's Ice Station just after 7 a.m. found Farouk Haifa's body facedown behind the front counter, said Azhr Haifa, a cousin of the store owner.

When the employee turned him over, he noticed multiple chest wounds, Azhr Haifa said.

Man gets 99 years for killing 2 Texas soldiers

EL PASO, Texas (AP) — A man who claimed self-defense has been sentenced to 99 years in prison for the fatal shooting of two West Texas soldiers in an argument over a woman.

A jury in El Paso on Monday sentenced Craig Allen Graham.

Jurors on Friday convicted Graham on two counts of murder in the 2012 gunfire outside a bar that killed two Fort Bliss privates — Preston Brown and Damien Bailey. Investigators say the victims were innocent bystanders.

71-year-old faces 16 counts of molestation

NEW BRAUNFELS — For years, authorities have said, Refugio Ortega has been molesting little girls.

According to court documents, Ortega raped two of the girls, continuously sexually assaulted another and repeatedly touched two more improperly.

Last week, a Comal County grand jury indicted the 71-year-old New Braunfels resident on 16 counts of molestation crimes against children.

Judge holds self in contempt for his smartphone

IONIA, Mich. (AP) — A Michigan judge whose smartphone disrupted a hearing in his own courtroom has held himself in contempt and paid $25 for the infraction.

The Sentinel-Standard of Ionia and MLive.com report Judge Raymond Voet has a posted policy at Ionia County 64A District Court. It states that electronic devices causing a disturbance during court sessions will result in the owner being cited with contempt.

On Friday afternoon, during a prosecutor's closing argument during a jury trial, Voet's new smartphone began to emit sounds requesting phone voice commands. Voet says he thinks he bumped the phone, and the embarrassment likely left his face red.

During a break in the trial, Voet fined himself. He says if he can't live by the rules he enforces he has no business enforcing the rules.

Trial expected to show how zetas operate

A trial set to begin Monday in Austin promises an in-depth look at the Zetas drug cartel and the gang's reach into Texas, the Midwest and South America.

The chief defendant is José Treviño Morales, brother of the Zetas' brutal leader, Miguel Treviño Morales, who's a fugitive in Mexico. He'll be joined by four co-defendants, including Francisco Colorado Cessa, a Mexican businessman involved in the horse-racing industry but who made his money contracting for Mexico's state-owned oil company.

Their lawyers maintain their clients are innocent.

Four in family killed in wrong-way crash on U.S. 90

Police charged a Carrollton truck driver with four counts of intoxication manslaughter after he allegedly barreled down the wrong way on U.S. 90 West around midnight Saturday, slamming head-on into an SUV carrying a family of five from Brackettville, police said.

Seventh-grader Zachary Koontz, the youngest of the three children traveling in the vehicle, was the only survivor, according to police and school officials.

This is the deadliest crash in the city this year, which has seen 50 people killed on the roads, 12 more than at this time in 2012, according to police.

A former justice of the peace is reportedly set to be charged with three murders, including a former Texas district attorney and assistant DA, after he was arrested on Saturday.

Eric Williams, 46, has been arrested by authorities investigating the murders of District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife, Cynthia, last month - and the fatal shooting of ADA Mark Hasse in late January.

Williams was booked into Kaufman County Jail early Saturday morning for making terroristic threats and 'insufficient bond.' He is being held on a $3million bond.

RI Supreme Court settles $8,500 Vegas loan dispute

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — What happens in Vegas shouldn't necessarily stay in Vegas, the Rhode Island Supreme Court said Friday as it ruled a Providence man who called a friend from Sin City to borrow $8,500 for gambling losses must pay it back despite an old law that says otherwise.

The court opinion ends a long legal dispute over the money given to Juan Catala by David S. Vogel, a Providence attorney who ran for Congress last fall as an independent. But despite the ruling from the high court, Catala said he'll never repay his former friend.

"I'll go to jail before I give him a dollar," Catala told The Associated Press.

Cops say man hid girlfriend's body under bed for three days

A man who confessed to killing his live-in girlfriend hid her body under their bed for three days before moving it to a vacant house next door, according to an arrest warrant affidavit released Saturday.

Robert Myers Jr., 40, has been in jail since April 2 on theft, criminal mischief and drug charges, but a murder charge was added Friday after police said he confessed to killing Cecelia Stegall, 50, whose remains were found Wednesday in the 200 block of Paschal Street.

On March 18, an anonymous caller reported to Crime Stoppers that three months earlier Myers had stabbed Stegall to death and hid her body under a nearby house or possibly a stairwell, the affidavit says. Searching the vacant house, police found Stegall's remains wrapped in a blanket in a closet under the stairwell.

Seguin death ruled homicide

A man who Seguin police found dead in his home Friday was killed by blunt force trauma to the head, an autopsy showed, and the death is being investigated as a homicide, officials said Saturday.

Capt. Maureen Watson said the man has been identified as Leslie “Adrian” Swenson, 62. He worked for an electrical contractor in San Antonio.

This is the first homicide in Seguin this year, Watson said. Police ask anyone with information about Swenson to call 830-303-TIPS, which can be done anonymously.

Travis County DA Rosemary Lehmberg says she doesn’t plan to resign

Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg, arrested and charged with drunken driving overnight, plans to remain in office and will not resign, according to a spokeswoman.

According to county records, Lehmberg, 63, was arrested by Travis County deputies in Northern Travis County near RM 2222 and FM 620 and booked into the county jail shortly after 2 a.m.

An arrest affidavit was not clear whether she took a breath test. She told deputies that she had consumed two vodka drinks earlier in the evening.

Lehmberg had been released as of 8:30 a.m. today.
