Father accused of trying to sacrifice his son
NBC San Diego -

A father is in custody, accused of attempting to sacrifice his own son in a San Diego area cemetery.

Joseph Ramirez, 30, took his family to Mount Hope Cemetery Saturday around 4:30 p.m. and told them his dead grandmother told him to sacrifice  the 8-year-old boy, according to San Diego police.

Officers released a report stating Ramirez had brought candles to the cemetery. One of the candles broke, and he used a piece of the broken glass to slash open his son's forearms.

California man sues BMW for persistent erection
CBS Detroit -

SAN FRANCISCO (WWJ) - BMW North America has probably had to deal with plenty of  unusual lawsuits, but one filed last week may be a first — a California man says the seat on his motorcycle has given him an erection he just can’t shake.

Henry Wolf of California is suing BMW America and aftermarket seatmaker Corbin-Pacific claiming his issue began after a four-hour ride on his 1993 BMW motorcycle, with a ridge like seat. Wolf is seeking compensation for lost wages, medical expenses, emotional distress and what he calls “general damage.”

He said he’s had the erection non-stop for 20 months. And it comes with another side effect: The lawsuit says Wolf is “now is unable to engage in sexual activity, which is causing him substantial emotional and mental anguish.”

Nearly eight years after his fabled career at CBS News imploded like a death star over the notorious George W. Bush/Texas Air National Guard segment on 60 Minutes Wednesday, he can’t stop combing the debris for shards of vindication.

“I have a story to tell from my point of view,” he says about his new book, Rather Outspoken: My Life in the News, which roasts network management for its “spineless” behavior during the Bush episode; takes potshots at his successor in the CBS Evening News anchor chair, Katie Couric, as a purveyor of “News Lite”; and settles scores with former colleagues who, as he writes, “after pretending to be friends for all those years, stealthily snuck around giving anonymous newspaper quotes and otherwise scheming to put the dirk in deep when I was down and hurting.”

Australian Billionaire to build Titanic II
Breitbart -

One of Australia's richest men, Clive Palmer, has unveiled plans for a 21st century version of the Titanic to be built in China, with its first voyage from England to New York set for 2016.

Palmer, a self-made mining billionaire, said he has commissioned state-owned Chinese company CSC Jinling Shipyard to construct Titanic II with exactly the same dimensions as its predecessor.

"It will be every bit as luxurious as the original Titanic but of course it will have state-of-the-art 21st century technology and the latest navigation and safety systems," Palmer said in a statement, released on Monday.

Yes, the art of making moonshine with a still is alive and well in Florida.

Granny used to call her mash 'White Lightning.'

Bob Tibbs, 69, is accused of selling strawberry, blackberry and apple-flavored moonshine — as well as plain ole "regular" — to undercover officers during a sting that ended with his arrest, reports the Orlando Sentinel.

He sold his hi-octane hooch, as well as seafood, roadside in Bunnell.

Deputies later dismantled a still they found on his property after his arrest, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said.

Sleepy driver pleads not guilty in manslaughter
By Michelle Casady - Express-News

Ruben Renteria, who was indicted earlier this month on two counts of manslaughter, was back in court Tuesday to enter a plea of not guilty.

The indictment by a Nueces County grand jury stems from an incident last August, when Renteria drove his girlfriend, her three children and her sister's five children from San Antonio to Port Aransas for a day at the beach. He fell asleep behind the wheel, just five minutes from a rest stop where he planned to take a break, and wrecked. The vehicle flipped, killing two of the eight children inside the Mitsubishi SUV.

Renteria's girlfriend, Jeanette Castañon, lost her son, Jacob Ricarte, 8, and her niece, Jelena Robles, 3, in the crash.

Brady material hidden?

This could be problematic for the former prosecutor.

The Brady rule, named after a Supreme Court case, means the prosecution must release material which may be exculpatory in nature.  i.e. evidence which tends to show the defendant may not not have committed the offense or is otherwise somehow justified in taking the actions they did.

Pretty serious offense to Justice.

CORPUS CHRISTI – Appearing fragile, muddled and deeply forgetful, Sandra Eastwood, who five years ago was the aggressive lead prosecutor in the Hannah Overton capital murder trial, took hostile questioning herself Wednesday.

Eastwood, who didn't want to testify, is accused by defense lawyers of hiding crucial exculpatory evidence from them during the 2007 trial and also engaging in other misconduct.

These are among the grounds cited in an appeal by Overton to the Court of Criminal Appeals of Texas. The scientific evidence at her trial is also being called into question.

Warning Graphic Photo: Possible New Evidence Shows George Zimmerman's Bloodied Head
 ABC News -

A new photograph obtained exclusively by ABC News showing the bloodied back of George Zimmerman's head, which was apparently taken three minutes after he shot and killed Trayvon Martin, gives possible credence to his claim that Martin had bashed his head against the concrete as Zimmerman fought for his life.

The revelation comes as his attorney and prosecutors prepare for Zimmerman's bail hearing today, which could result in his being released from a Florida jail. Zimmerman, 28, is being held on charges of second-degree murder for the Feb. 26 shooting of Martin, 17, which could carry a life sentence if he is convicted.

The exclusive image shows blood trickling down the back of Zimmerman's head from two cuts. It also shows a possible contusion forming on the crown of his head. The original police report that night notes that the back of Zimmerman's head was wet, and that he was bleeding from the nose and head.

“We have begun to clear Nuevo Laredo of Zetas because we want a free city and so you can live in peace,” proclaims a banner, under which were posed the bodies, as well as the gunmen who presumably work for Guzman.

“We are narcotics traffickers and we don't mess with honest working or business people.”

Pigs at the trough

I'm thinking these folks ought to be slammed for this act of theft.

They're already being fed from the public trough but apparently that wasn't enough for them.

District fires workers in unemployment benefits probe
By Nikita Stewart - The Washington Post

Mayor Vincent C. Gray’s administration has fired 61 city employees for collecting unemployment benefits while working for the District government, city officials said Tuesday.

The city’s Department of Employment Services, which oversees the jobless-compensation program, said in February that dozens of current and former city workers had received the fraudulent payments

The checks ranged from a few hundred dollars to more than $20,000 per employee since 2009 — or about $800,000 in all — according to city officials. The city suspended 92 employees, among them the 61 who have been recently terminated.

The sounds of justice

Teenage victims of sex traffickers will get money from sale of brothels
By Lise Olsen - Houston Chronicle

For seven years, the bars and shacks on the gritty east edge of Houston served as unsightly venues of serial sex crimes where a convicted human trafficker ruled with threats, and Mexican teens as young as 14 were battered, forced to live in sheds, and toil as cantina call girls after being smuggled to Houston.

But U.S. District Judge Lynn Hughes ruled Tuesday that five of the youngest victims in one of the city's most visible human trafficking rings will benefit from the sale of ringleader Maria "Nancy" Rojas and her husband's bars and the rest of their ramshackle real estate empire, according to instructions delivered to prosecutors.

It is the first time prosecutors have successfully pushed for forfeiture of assets for the benefit of sex trafficking victims in Houston - and among only a few cases nationally, said Edward Gallagher, a senior federal prosecutor who heads Houston's Human Trafficking Rescue Alliance (HTRA).

Capital murder?

That poor mother, may she rest in peace.

Kidnapped baby safe; mother slain
By Mike Glen - Houston Chronicle

HOUSTON — An infant boy only 3 days old was recovered safely Tuesday night hours after being snatched from his mother, who was shot in the process and later died of her wounds.

Although details of the murder and kidnapping remained sketchy as authorities continued to put together pieces of a bizarre puzzle, the one unavoidable fact was that Kala Golden Schuchardt was killed after taking her son to a local pediatrician for a routine checkup Tuesday afternoon.

“My baby, my baby!” she screamed as Keegan Schuchardt was grabbed in his car seat in a pickup by a woman who had jumped from a Lexus sedan parked beside her. Authorities said the woman shot Kala Schuchardt several times in the chest before speeding off with another person, identified only as an adult male sitting in the passenger side of the sedan.
