Indian arrested for letting son, 9, drive Ferrari

NEW DELHI (AP) — Police in India have arrested a man who allowed his 9-year-old son to drive his Ferrari.

Mohammed Nisham was arrested on charges of endangering the life of a child and allowing a minor to drive, said Inspector Biju Kumar. He was released after posting bail of 5,000 rupees ($92), Kumar said.

Nisham's wife filmed the boy driving the sports car on his 9th birthday two weeks ago with his 5-year-old brother in the passenger seat. The video was widely watched on YouTube and created an outrage across India, causing police to file charges.

1913 nickel fetches more than $3.1 M at auction

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Four Virginia siblings who never let a rare 5-cent piece slip through their fingers, even when it was declared a fake, have been rewarded for their devotion to a humble family heirloom after the century-old coin sold for more than $3.1 million.

The 1913 Liberty Head nickel, one of only five known to exist, was sold to two bidders for $3.17 million at an auction Thursday night in suburban Chicago.

The children of the late Melva Givens of Salem will divide $2.7 million, before taxes.

D.A. dismisses Rockett charges

A felony burglary case against UTSA senior baseball standout Daniel Rockett has been dismissed, a spokesman for the Bexar County district attorney's office said Monday.

“The case against him has been rejected,” First Assistant District Attorney Cliff Herberg said in a telephone interview. “That was basically at the request of all the alleged victims involved.”

Rockett said through a team spokesman that he is “thankful” for the outcome.

Kendall Judge struggling to rebound

BOERNE — Kendall County Judge Gaylan Schroeder appeared frail, and at times disoriented, upon returning to the dais Monday from a four-month medical leave after having seizures in January.

“Somebody tell me what we just did,” he said after joining commissioners in voting to not pursue the creation of a new state district court here during the current legislative session.

Schroeder, 73, had largely recovered from two strokes in late 2011 before the setback, which limited his recent service to infrequent courthouse visits and briefings at home.

HUNTSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A Texas inmate was executed Thursday evening for fatally shooting one of three people he and a partner abducted during a convenience store robbery nearly 11 years ago.

Richard Cobb, 29, didn’t deny using a 20-gauge shotgun to kill Kenneth Vandever in an East Texas field where two women also were shot and one was raped. He was convicted of capital murder.

“Life is death, death is life. I hope that someday this absurdity that humanity has come to will come to an end,” Cobb said when asked if he had any last words. “Life is too short. I hope anyone that has negative energy towards me will resolve that.

Bradenton teacher accused of throwing student

BRADENTON - A Bradenton teacher was charged with child abuse after he carried a student out of the classroom and threw him outside, authorities said Friday.

Colby Ray Cadwell, 32, a teacher at Horizons Academy, faces a third-degree felony charge with a maximum penalty of five years in prison if he is convicted.

The alleged incident took place April 23 as the 13-year-old student stood in class, waiting in line.

Police say man stabbed son over pawned property

San Antonio police said an argument between a father and his son early today led to a stabbing that hospitalized the younger man and left the dad facing charges.

The stabbing occurred in the 400 block of San Blas about 2:30 a.m. when the father became upset that his 22-year-old son had pawned property. The son was taken to University Hospital in critical condition and the father was being investigated on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, police said.

Their names were not immediately released by police.

Calif. bill would let non-citizens serve on juries

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- The California Assembly passed a bill on Thursday that would make the state the first in the nation to allow non-citizens who are in the country legally to serve on jury duty.

Assemblyman Bob Wieckowski, D-Fremont, said his bill, AB1401, would help California widen the pool of prospective jurors and help integrate immigrants into the community.

It does not change other criteria for being eligible to serve on a jury, such as being at least 18, living in the county that is making the summons, and being proficient in English.

Judge says Obama reprieves lacked legal basis

The Obama administration overstepped its authority last year in granting deportation reprieves to thousands of immigrants brought into the country illegally as children, a federal court in Dallas has found.

But U.S. District Judge Reed O'Connor stopped short of ordering a stop to the program in a preliminary ruling this week, saying he was not sure he had the jurisdiction to do so.

Even so, his opinion offered a strong rebuke to an initiative President Barack Obama touted throughout his re-election bid to woo Latino voters and comes amid a White House push to legalize millions more immigrants living in the country illegally.

S. Texas singer found dead

South Texas balladeer Jesus “Chuy” Quintanilla, known for the narcocorrido storytelling that mythologizes drug cartels, was found shot to death Thursday in the citrus groves north of Mission, authorities said.

Quintanilla's body, discovered by irrigation workers, was in a pool of blood next to his SUV. He was shot at least twice in the head, according to Hidalgo County Sheriff Lupe Treviño.

Quintanilla's family informed the department that they hadn't been able to reach the singer since Wednesday evening.

Scooter Store settles dispute

The Scooter Store appears to have resolved a dispute that could have forced it to shut down and liquidate its business.

After The Scooter Store's bankruptcy last week, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services froze all Medicare payments due the New Braunfels supplier of power wheelchairs and scooters on April 17.

CMS contended it was entitled to take Medicare payments owed The Scooter Store for pre-bankruptcy services to offset millions in overpayments the agency previously made to the company.

Ore. department's concrete police pig back in pink

ASTORIA, Ore. (AP) — The Astoria Police Department's concrete pig is back in the pink and ready for another 20 years of duty.

The Daily Astorian reports the pig was dropped off at the station in 1993 by someone who didn't stay to explain the gift.

Unoffended, the police promptly adopted the animal and left it in place.

Rapist sentenced to life after second victim revealed

A Leon Valley man already serving a 20-year sentence for the 2008 rape of one woman was ordered Wednesday to serve life in prison for the beating and rape of another woman months later.

It took jurors 25 minutes to determined Richard M. Lopez's sentences, which also included a maximum 20-year term for the aggravated assault. The group also ordered $20,000 in fines.

State District Judge Ron Rangel ordered the sentences to be served concurrently with each other and with Lopez's previous sentence. Lopez, 26, won't be eligible to apply for parole for 30 years.

Attorney accused of drunken driving

Add “drunken driving” to the criminal charges lodged against high-profile attorney Hilda Quesada Valadez, who faces 46 felony counts of courthouse fraud.

Valadez, 52, was released around 3 a.m. Tuesday, hours after she was arrested on one count of driving while intoxicated. Although San Antonio police could not immediately find the report from her arrest, a spokeswoman said police detained her around 7 p.m. Monday in the 13,000 block of Blanco Road.

Once known for defending more indigents than any other attorney in town, Valadez made headlines last year when she was indicted on allegations that she forged judges' signatures and double-billed Bexar County. She faces 46 felony counts in courthouse fraud.

No lawyer was listed for Valadez, who has previously said that she was broke and couldn't find local legal representation.

Japan PM Abe warns China of force over islands landing

Japan would respond with force if any attempt is made to land on disputed islands, PM Shinzo Abe has warned.

A flotilla of 10 fishing boats carrying Japanese activists was also reported to be in the area, as well as the Japanese coastguard.

Mr Abe was speaking in parliament hours after dozens of lawmakers visited a controversial war-linked shrine.

A total of 168 lawmakers paid their respects at the Yasukuni Shrine, which commemorates Japan's war dead, including war criminals, in a move likely to anger regional neighbours who say the shrine is a reminder of Japan's military past.
