Women delivering newspapers in Torrance shot in manhunt for ex-cop
L.A. Times -
Two women who were shot by Los Angeles police in Torrance early
Thursday during a massive manhunt for an ex-LAPD officer were delivering
newspapers, sources said.
The women, shot in the 19500 block of Redbeam Avenue, were taken to area
hospitals, Torrance police Lt. Devin Chase said. They were not
identified. One was shot in the hand and the other in the back,
according to Jesse Escochea, who captured video of the victims
being treated.
It was not immediately known what newspapers the women were
delivering. After the shooting, the blue pickup was riddled with bullet
holes and what appeared to be newspapers lay in the street alongside.

Officials' integrity vital: Xi
By Zhao Lei and Chen Xin - China Daily
Officials who are out for pleasure and love formality must be told their behavior is unacceptable and reprimanded, he said.
Party chief Xi urged officials to spend more time with the public to address their problems and concerns, and work harder to develop poverty-stricken regions.
His remarks reflected the new leadership's determination to boost the image and working style of the Party and the government.
A good work ethic and personal integrity should be the key criteria in selecting, evaluating and promoting officials, Xi said during his four-day visit to the province, which started on Saturday.
The comments came against a backdrop of a number of recent scandals that have involved officials suspected of abusing their power or embezzling taxpayers' money.

Heisman Trophy winner was stopped for speeding south of Dallas
AOL Autos -
Heisman Trophy winner Johnny Manziel may have outrun the Oklahoma
football team's defense in epic fashion earlier this month, but the
Texas A&M quarterback cannot outrun the long arm of the law.
Police in the suburban Dallas city of Ennis issued Manziel a
speeding ticket
last week. While the infraction was ordinary, a local judge found
himself in some hot water after posting about his defendant on his
personal Facebook account.
"Too funny," Judge W. Lee Johnson wrote. "So it seems that a certain
unnamed (very) recent Heisman Trophy winner from a certain unnamed
"college" down south of here got a gift from the Ennis P.D. while he was
speeding on the 287 bypass yesterday."

Montana man made up sob story that got him pizza
Associated Press -
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A Montana man whose tearful reluctance to rob a pizza restaurant earned him free food apparently made up the sob story that gained him the clerk's sympathy.
David Randall Lacey, 35, entered a Papa John's pizza restaurant on Jan. 22 with a bandanna over his face and gave the clerk a note demanding money, Helena police said. He broke down crying and told the clerk he needed the money to support his wife and children, who were hungry. The clerk made him a large pepperoni pizza and some chicken wings as he waited, and the man left.
The Independent Record reports (http://bit.ly/14vlTZr) an investigation found Lacey has no children in Helena and changed his story when he saw how little money was in the cash register — just $24.56, according to a police report.

4 arrested for defying San Francisco's nudity ban
Associated Press -
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Four protesters were arrested entirely in the buff as they took to the steps of San Francisco City Hall in a brazen challenge of the city's ban on public nudity on Friday, the first day it went into effect.
One woman and three men — one wearing just a mesh thong — were taken into custody as about a dozen other protesters in various states of undress paraded around with painted slogans on their bodies, holding up signs with messages such as "The Human Body is Beautiful."
Police gave them a 15-minute warning to disperse or put pants on before officers arrested those who failed to cover themselves. The protesters said their arrest would advance the cause of "body freedom."

Jury finds cop used excessive force
By Guillermo Contreras - Express-News
A federal jury has awarded a local woman $6,700 after finding that a police officer used excessive force against her during a traffic stop in 2009.
The verdict, while small, is significant because it partly diverges from the Police Department's internal investigation that fully cleared 12-year officers Felipe Ramos and James Schneider for the Dec. 10, 2009, incident.
While jurors cleared Schneider and Ramos of the false arrest of Gwendolyn Evans, 53, the jury found only Ramos used excessive force.
