Sarkozy scolds son for antics at French palace
Associated press -

PARIS (AP) -- French President Nicolas Sarkozy says his youngest son was out of line when he and friends pelted a policewoman with "vegetables" but says there's always the risk that kids will be kids when left unattended.

In recent days, French media have reported that 15-year-old Louis Sarkozy and friends at the presidential palace threw tomatoes and wadded paper balls at the on-duty officer on March 8.

In an offbeat TV interview Friday, Sarkozy sought to set the record straight. He told Canal Plus: "He was wrong, but it wasn't little balls ... it was vegetables."

By Craig Kapitan - Express-News

A teen mother who said she was forced to prostitute herself for heroin was sentenced to 12 years in prison Friday for abandoning her abused, already dead infant in front of a West Side fire station 21/2 years ago.

Julie Navejar, now 18, wept as she stood shackled before state District Judge Carmen Kelsey in a red jail jumpsuit during the punishment hearing and asked for probation.

“I somehow wish I could go back in time and start over again,” she said, adding that she has matured during the time she has been incarcerated and now wants to counsel other teen drug addicts. “I'm sorry. I just lost my way. ... I'm not the same person anymore.”

Execution dates set for two death row inmates
By Michelle Mondo - Express-News

Execution dates were set for two Bexar County death row inmates, including one who was given a reprieve last month days before his scheduled execution, according to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Anthony Bartee, 55, was scheduled to die on Feb. 28 but was granted a reprieve to allow for additional forensic testing. Bartee's attorney, David Dow, sent a letter to the court arguing the new May 2 date should not have been set because the DNA testing has not been completed. He said neither he nor his client was told of a hearing to set a new date, the letter said.

Bartee was convicted in the August 1996 robbery-murder of his friend David Cook.

Krystle Rochelle Tanner, 26, remained jailed without bond in San Augustine, about 200 miles southeast of Fort Worth. She was arrested on a kidnapping charge Monday.

The boy's mother, Auboni Champion-Morin, told Houston television station KPRC that she may be reunited with her son later this week. Authorities said she must first undergo a DNA test, even though they're sure of his identity.

Why we need security at the Courthouse II

I first got wind of this yesterday when a friend in California started e-mailing me to see if I was alright.

I explained it was nearly 250+ miles away.

Unfortunately Minnie Ray Sebolt wasn't and was killed, may she rest in peace.

However the incident supports my theory that it isn't needed so much for criminal cases, even though there were criminal allegations, as it is for family law matters.

Gunman kills 1, wounds 3 outside Beaumont Courthouse
By Tony Freemantle - Houston Chronicle

BEAUMONT — A long-standing family feud involving allegations of sexual assault of a child erupted in a “classic shootout” outside the Jefferson County Courthouse Wednesday, killing one innocent bystander and wounding three others, including the accused gunman's 20-year-old daughter.

Authorities said Bartholomew Granger, 41, of Houston, began shooting at relatives outside the courthouse shortly after 11 a.m. while waiting for his trial on charges he had assaulted a family member to resume. An elderly woman died in the entrance to the courthouse; one person was hit in the hand; a third, wounded in the back, managed to stagger into the building; and a fourth victim, his daughter, was felled in a parking lot.

Police said Granger, under fire from several police officers, then tried to escape in a pickup, which was disabled by gunfire before he could get very far. Wounded, he ran into an office building a couple of blocks from the courthouse, taking several hostages before being taken into custody about noon.

Trial begins without juror
Barbershop murder trial begins
By Craig Kapitan - Express-News

The murder trial of Shawn Michael Lewis, a Northeast Bexar County man accused of using an assault rifle to gun down a friend outside his brother's unlicensed neighborhood barbershop, got off to a shaky start Tuesday as a juror reneged on her duty to hear the case, citing religious grounds.

A mistrial was briefly considered at the start of the day after the juror informed the judge that after being selected Monday she had consulted with the pastor at her new church and was told that it's a sin to sit in judgment of others.

But testimony continued anyway, ending for the day with a longtime friend of Lewis' telling the 11 remaining jurors that he saw the defendant alone wield and fire a gun that night.
