A Bexar County Jail detention officer has been charged with violating the civil rights of a person in custody, accused of sexual contact with a female inmate.

In jail since May awaiting trial for burglary of a habitation and family assault charges, Laura Elizalde, 25, said Marco Cedillo, 38, sexually assaulted her at least six times between late July and early August, her attorney Kenneth Bell said.

Elizalde was afraid of retribution until another inmate helped her make an outcry, Bell said.

‘Not one stone fell’ in wrong spot as old jail demolished

NEW BRAUNFELS — The demolition of the old county jail, a 1930s addition to the historic Comal County Courthouse, went without hitch and crews on Thursday were busy removing the debris.

The demolition of the three-story old jail is part of the $8.67 million renovation the courthouse, built in 1898.

Thief who swallowed diamond is caught on X-ray

A thief in Spain who stole a diamond from a British woman -- and then swallowed it -- was caught when police stopped him at a checkpoint and forced him to undergo an X-ray.

The theft occurred when two British women entered a restaurant in the luxury southern resort of Marbella and one of them left her handbag on the floor by her chair, police said in a statement.

"Two well-dressed men came in, one sitting at the bar and the other next to the woman," it said.

8-year-old girl arrested for allegedly punching vice-principal

An 8-year-old girl was arrested for punching the vice principal at her school in the chest this morning in Ewa Beach, police said. 

Police said the girl punched the 61-year-old man about 8:15 a.m., causing pain. The girl was arrested for investigation of second-degree assault.

Teen who faked cancer faces theft charges

A 22-year-old man was arrested Wednesday after police discovered a lewd conversation he had with a teenage girl through an online social networking site, according to an arrest warrant affidavit.

Alejandro David Cristancho was charged with online solicitation of a minor with intent to meet and engage in sexual contact and aggravated sexual assault of a child. He was at Bexar County Jail on Wednesday night in lieu of $100,000 bail.

A guardian gave investigators access to the 13-year-old girl's Facebook account, where they found a vulgar chat between her and Cristancho, the warrant states. The child initially gave her age as 15 and later posted she was 14, while the man claimed to be 17, police said.

The bloodstained bodies of a man and a woman were found hanging from a bridge in northeast Mexico Tuesday, along with threatening messages to people who report drug violence on social networks.

The messages lay near the two bodies, found half naked, alluding to websites set up for people to report drug violence in the area, police said.

"That will happen to all of them," read the text of one message signed with the letter 'Z' usually associated with the Zetas drug gang.

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia (AP) — A captive orangutan often spotted smoking cigarettes given to her by zoo visitors is being forced to kick the habit, a Malaysian wildlife official said Monday.

Government authorities seized the adult ape named Shirley from a state-run zoo in Malaysia's southern Johor state last week after she and several other animals there were deemed to be living in poor conditions.

Shirley is now being quarantined at another zoo in a neighboring state and is expected to be sent to a Malaysian wildlife center on Borneo island within weeks.

A San Antonio mother who told police she fatally stabbed her two young sons as part of a failed murder-suicide attempt after a night with friends smoking crack cocaine agreed Tuesday to spend the rest of her life in prison.

A lengthy jury-selection process had been set to begin next week for the death penalty trial of Elyse Colon, 24, who in February 2010 called 911 and casually told a responding officer, “I just killed my babies.”

She quietly entered guilty pleas before state District Judge Juanita Vasquez-Gardner for two counts of capital murder of a child younger than 6. With prosecutors dropping the death penalty request as part of the plea deal, the only other sentencing option was life in prison without parole.

NEW BRAUNFELS — Police announced Tuesday that the decaying human remains found last week in a brushy thicket near an orange pickup truck in fact are those of suspected wife killer Shannon Dee Smith.

Authorities identified Smith’s badly decomposed remains through a dental records match, said Capt. John McDonald of New Braunfels Police Department. McDonald said investigators had received no autopsy results and expected them in no fewer than 35-40 days.

Shooting at auto repair shop kills woman

A man reportedly shot and killed his ex-girlfriend in the parking lot of a West Side auto repair business Monday.

Police said a man in his 50s who works at Precision Auto in the 5400 block of Old Highway 90 was detained in connection with the shooting.

The woman, in her 40s, was shot in the chest and pronounced dead at the scene, San Antonio Police Sgt. James Cline said.

A teen heroin addict who left her gaunt, bruised and already-dead infant wrapped in a pink blanket in front of a San Antonio fire station two years ago opted Monday to avoid a trial, instead pleading no contest to injury to a child by omission.

Julie Navejar, who turned 18 last month, wore a red Bexar County Jail jumpsuit with handcuffs shackled to a chain wrapped around her waist as she stood before state District Judge Carmen Kelsey, answering questions with “Yes, ma'am.”

In exchange for her plea, prosecutors have agreed to ask for no more than 12 years in prison when she is sentenced by the judge in November. She has applied for deferred adjudication probation.

I found this letter to the editor to be a powerful and graceful denunciation of an ugly situation which has ocurred in Comal County.

Because I believe it is so important I have republished it in its entirety.

I cannot say any more about the incident which is currently being investigated.  But I applaud Commissioner Parker for so eloquently speaking out on the subject.

This community must not stand by and witness the intimidation of a family 

From letters to the Herald-Zeitung

Editor's note: This letter is written in response to a series of articles published by the Herald-Zeitung about a dispute between neighbors in Spring Branch's Flying R subdivision.

What I have to say may offend some yet it needs to be said. I first want to give my disclaimer. These words written are mine and do not reflect the views of anyone in Comal County government and or this newspaper.

With that said, I have lived and worked in our beautiful community for more than 10 years. Our community is a great place to live and raise a family. As I travel this great state, some still cannot believe that I am an elected official in Comal County. Yet I smile proudly and tell them our wonderful community is open to all.

Just as I have bragged state-wide about the fact that our community looks beyond race, which is evident by my two election victories as well as others, we still have persons with such reprehensible behavior in our midst.

Now, I am not one to play the "race card," further I have shunned using it and I truly despise Jessie Jackson and Al Sharpton as charlatans who devalue the blight of minorities. But I will speak out when I believe something is wrong. So let's call it what it is - "Racism" plain a simple.

This isn't the silent racism, but bold brash rude intimidation style racism, the kind that everyone in the United States has worked so hard to put in our past. Among the allegations in this debacle are a monkey hanging from the Risenmay family entrance, the regular use of racial slurs, firing a shotgun in the family's general direction, obstruction of the children's school bus by using a tractor and even a sign in the yard of a neighbor that read, "Krazy Kike K...," (the last word is not fit for print), the "K's" being much larger than the rest of the words.

Something should be done immediately before this escalates further. If any of this is proven true, I am calling on the POA Board of the Flying R Ranch Community to immediately denounce and repudiate these actions.

And if these allegations are proven true, I also ask our local law enforcement to see if these actions listed above are hate crimes.

 I do not believe we as a community should stand by and witness the intimidation of a family in our community. This is an outrage; it is appalling and should be embarrassing to each and every one of us. Please join me in celebrating the selfless act of the Risenmay family who have opened their home to children they care for and love.

This is an example of the good side to America; don't let ignorance and hate destroy the beauty.

You can't hide from the Ride!

Last week Comal County initiated its 24 hour 7 days a week "No Refusal" program.  If you are arrested for DWI and you refuse to give specimen of your breath a search warrant will be obtained and a sample of your blood will be drawn for analysis.

The blood draws are generally showing folks with BAC (blood alcohol) levels of 2-3 times the legal limit are driving around in Comal County.  Many are repeat DWI offenders who have had drummed into their heads "no blow".  Well, that strategy won't work any longer.

CHICAGO (AP) — The cartoon character SpongeBob SquarePants is in hot water from a study suggesting that watching just nine minutes of that program can cause short-term attention and learning problems in 4-year-olds.

The problems were seen in a study of 60 children randomly assigned to either watch "SpongeBob," or the slower-paced PBS cartoon "Caillou" or assigned to draw pictures. Immediately after these nine-minute assignments, the kids took mental function tests; those who had watched "SpongeBob" did measurably worse than the others.

Previous research has linked TV-watching with long-term attention problems in children, but the new study suggests more immediate problems can occur after very little exposure — results that parents of young kids should be alert to, the study authors said.
