MUNCIE -- Police say a Muncie man watched from inside a tobacco store Tuesday as his 2-year-old son, left alone in the father's running pickup truck, shifted the vehicle into reverse toward a busy city road and then back into drive, headed for the store.

Fortunately, an off-duty police officer was able to gain control of the vehicle before the youngster was injured.

With a warrant out for his arrest, police said, the father walked outside, shoved the officer and took off running, once again leaving his toddler son behind in the parking lot.

Border agents make bologna bust at NM crossing

SANTA TERESA, N.M. (AP) — It wasn't drugs or human trafficking but illegal bologna that caught the attention of border agents at a New Mexico port of entry.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers at Santa Teresa seized 385 pounds of the Mexican contraband meat from behind the seat of a pickup that stopped at the port on Friday.

It's illegal to bring the bologna across the border because it's made of pork and has the potential to introduce foreign animal diseases into the U.S. pork industry.

The 33-year-old Mexican man who was transporting the meat was assessed a $1,000 fine and released.

Usually officers see one or two rolls of bologna — not 35 as in this case. Officials say it was the largest bologna bust ever recorded at the Santa Teresa crossing.

New Braunfels man sentenced to life in prison

A 46-year-old man accused of stabbing a woman outside a Wal-Mart store in New Braunfels last summer has been sentenced to life in prison.

Juan Leandro Villarreal, a New Braunfels resident, pleaded guilty last month to first-degree felony aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to a Comal County court official. He stabbed a 64-year-old woman when he tried to steal her purse last July.

The victim was airlifted to a San Antonio hospital and survived the attack. Villarreal was found a couple of hours later by New Braunfels police. He led investigators on a chase until he was discovered hiding behind bushes in a wooded area around the Little League baseball fields on Loop 337, according to news reports.

Man gets 12 years in prison for receiving child pornography

A 30-year-old man was sentenced Wednesday to 12 years in prison for receiving child pornography.

Timothy Curry apologized to U.S. District Judge Xavier Rodriguez for his conduct related to child porn, but said nothing about another allegation: After FBI agents gave him a polygraph test and he failed it, he admitted touching a 10-year-old girl for sexual gratification.

Curry's lawyer, assistant federal public defender Kurt May, asked the judge to give Curry the five-year minimum. He argued that there have been disparities nationally in sentencing defendants charged with having child porn, and noted that some with similar conduct as his client have even received probation.

This may have been a case of concern that no one in the jury would really care that another "bad" actor, (afterall he was buying marijuana) was killed in a dispute.

A San Antonian was sentenced to 25 years in prison Wednesday after pleading guilty to killing a Sam Houston High School senior three years ago during a drug deal gone bad.

Witnesses told police Isaac Vela Jr., 18, set up a meeting with defendant Bernard Troy Walker, 30, in the parking lot of a Walzem Road strip mall in September 2008 in an attempt to purchase 30 pounds of marijuana for $9,000.

Instead, Walker shot him in the torso and face.

Report: Doctors Refusing to Treat Overweight Patients

Fifteen obstetrics-gynecology practices out of 105 polled by the Sun Sentinel said they have set weight limits for new patients. Some of the doctors said the main reason was their exam tables or other equipment can't handle people over a certain weight, but at least six said heavy women run a higher risk of complications.

"People don't realize the risk we're taking by taking care of these patients," the newspaper quoted Dr. Albert Triana of South Miami as saying. "There's more risk of something going wrong and more risk of getting sued. Everything is more complicated with an obese patient in GYN surgeries and in [pregnancies]," he told the newspaper.

It is not illegal for doctors to refuse overweight patients, but it has medical ethicists worried. So far, the weight cutoffs have been enacted only by South Florida ob-gyns, who have long complained about high numbers of lawsuits after difficult births and high rates for medical-malpractice insurance.

Fields of watermelon burst in China farm fiasco

BEIJING (AP) — Watermelons have been bursting by the score in eastern China after farmers gave them overdoses of growth chemicals during wet weather, creating what state media called fields of "land mines."

About 20 farmers around Danyang city in Jiangsu province were affected, losing up to 115 acres (45 hectares) of melon, China Central Television said in an investigative report.

Prices over the past year prompted many farmers to jump into the watermelon market. All of those with exploding melons apparently were first-time users of the growth accelerator forchlorfenuron, though it has been widely available for some time, CCTV said in the report broadcast Monday night.

Man guilty of trying to kill SAPD Officer

It took jurors about eight hours of deliberations Tuesday to find a local man guilty of trying to kill a San Antonio police officer who moments earlier had fatally shot the defendant's brother.

Joel Julian Castillo, 20, now faces up to life in prison for the attempted capital murder of a police officer. Castillo was arrested in September 2008, after Officer Jeremy Swindells reported getting shot twice. He told other officers he thought he had also shot the assailant, and Castillo was found a short time later bleeding.

Swindells told jurors during the trial that he had just shot burglary suspect John Otten, Castillo's brother, who he said had grabbed his baton and was about to hit him with it — when he started taking fire from a man perched on a nearby fence.

Bexar County homicide detectives have few leads on the deaths of two women whose bodies were discovered in two parts of the county Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Laura Sue Garza, 24, was found dead Monday on the Southeast Side, officials said.

The body of Crissy Hernandez, 22, was spotted on the far West Side Tuesday.

New home for Ohio man's pencil sharpener 'museum'

LOGAN, Ohio (AP) — Tourism officials have made a point of displaying the hundreds of pencil sharpeners collected by an Ohio minister who died last summer.

The Rev. Paul Johnson had kept his collection in a small shed he called his museum, outside his home in Carbon Hill in southeast Ohio. A new home for his more than 3,400 sharpeners was dedicated Friday inside a regional welcome center.

The Logan Daily News reports Johnson started collecting after his wife gave him a few pencil sharpeners as a gift in the late 1980s. He kept them organized in categories, including cats, Christmas and Disneyland. The oldest is 105 years old.

An Ohio Senate proclamation calls the new display "a fitting tribute" to Johnson, a World War II veteran.

The creator of the annual Wacky Warning Labels contest says the warning appears only in the English section of the multilingual instructions from the pen-maker.

The pen cap caveat is among five finalists announced Tuesday in the 14th annual contest that calls out silly warning labels and rails against lawsuits it deems frivolous.

BROWNSVILLE — Rio Grande City-based Border Patrol agents found more than a million dollars worth of marijuana as well as an Amazon parrot during Friday night patrols of the river banks, Customs and Border Protection said Monday.

The agents found the bird, valued at about $200, hidden in a beer box after they approached a group of people, all of whom fled into surrounding brush.

Later that evening, the agents spotted people loading bundles into the bed of a pickup. Those people also fled, leaving behind close to 1,300 pounds of marijuana.

Schwarzenegger reveals he had child with staffer

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has acknowledged that he fathered a child with a member of his household staff, a revelation that apparently prompted wife Maria Shriver to leave the couple's home before they announced their separation last week.

Schwarzenegger and Shriver jointly announced May 9 that they were splitting up after 25 years of marriage. Yet, Shriver moved out of the family's Brentwood mansion earlier in the year after Schwarzenegger acknowledged the child is his, The Los Angeles Times reported Tuesday.

"After leaving the governor's office I told my wife about this event, which occurred over a decade ago," Schwarzenegger told the Times in a statement that also was sent to The Associated Press early Tuesday. "I understand and deserve the feelings of anger and disappointment among my friends and family. There are no excuses and I take full responsibility for the hurt I have caused. I have apologized to Maria, my children and my family. I am truly sorry.

Quincy copper thieves steal phone lines, knock out service

QUINCY (CBS) – Police in Quincy are dealing with a kind of copper theft they haven’t seen before. Someone cut the copper telephone wires from two utility poles in the city; working lines that service Verizon customers. One of the customers, Cheryl Percy who owns Miller photography studio on Foster Street, lost telephone service for several hours.

"We didn’t have any idea why the phone wasn’t ringing. “We thought ‘what’s happening here,’” she said.

Police say thieves cut through plastic sheathing to get at the valuable copper wires. They allegedly cut off a four-foot section, exposing 300 pairs of wires. Quincy police Sgt. Patrick Faherty says the vandals hope to make some quick cash, but it’s risky for a quick return.

“It appears to be a crime of opportunity in that sense, and from a public safety perspective, we are concerned that people treat any electrical wire as if it’s live,” he said.

Human remains found in ditch by restaurant employee

An employee at a Mexican restaurant discovered human remains in a ditch adjacent to the eatery on Sunday.

The Apetito's Mexican Restaurant employee found the body around noon in a ditch near Loop 410 and Marbach Road.

The severely decomposed remains appear to be those of an unidentified Hispanic or Anglo male, judging by the clothing, San Antonio police said.
